Usually, no. Many Raspberry Pi boards have Wi-Fi built in, so you only need a USB Wi-Fi adapter if your particular board lacks wireless or you have a verified need its built-in Wi-Fi cannot meet. Check the exact model first: Raspberry Pi 1B, 1B+ and 2B have no built-in Wi-Fi, while other models vary by generation and configuration.
Which Raspberry Pi models have built-in Wi-Fi?
The name “Raspberry Pi” does not tell you whether a board has wireless. Use the model name printed on the board or shown in its documentation, then check the official Raspberry Pi getting-started networking table and hardware documentation.
| Model or family | Built-in Wi-Fi | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 1B, 1B+ and 2B | No | Use Ethernet or a compatible USB Wi-Fi adapter if you need wireless networking. |
| Original Raspberry Pi Zero (not Zero W) | No | For wireless, use a compatible adapter; account for the board’s USB host/OTG arrangement and available power. |
| Raspberry Pi 3B | Yes, 2.4 GHz | No adapter is needed for a 2.4 GHz network. The board does not have built-in 5 GHz Wi-Fi. |
| Raspberry Pi 3B+ and newer flagship computers | Yes, dual-band 2.4/5 GHz | Built-in Wi-Fi is normally sufficient for basic wireless access. |
| Raspberry Pi 3A+ | Yes, dual-band 2.4/5 GHz | It has Wi-Fi even though it does not have an Ethernet port. |
| Raspberry Pi Zero W and Zero 2 W | Yes, 2.4 GHz | The W models have built-in wireless; an adapter is ordinarily unnecessary for 2.4 GHz access. |
| Raspberry Pi 400, 500 and 500+ | Yes, dual-band 2.4/5 GHz | Built-in Wi-Fi is present. |
| Compute Modules | Varies by module and configuration | Wireless is optional on CM4 and CM5; check the exact module rather than assuming it includes Wi-Fi. |
Raspberry Pi’s documentation says a USB-to-Wi-Fi adapter can connect a device that does not have built-in Wi-Fi. It also cautions that not every adapter or Pi model supports 5 GHz, so match the supported band to the network you intend to use.

Your board has no built-in Wi-Fi
For a Raspberry Pi 1B, 1B+, 2B or original Zero, a compatible USB wireless adapter is an option when Ethernet is unavailable or wireless is required. On a Zero, check how the adapter will connect through the board’s USB arrangement and whether the setup has adequate power.

You have a specific requirement the built-in radio cannot meet
An adapter may be worth considering if you have confirmed that the board’s built-in wireless does not support the band or other requirement you need. For example, the Pi 3B and Zero W models provide 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not built-in 5 GHz. Do not assume an adapter will improve speed or reception: there is no general guarantee, and results depend on the specific adapter, board, network and environment.
You need wireless for setup, not a new radio
If your board already has Wi-Fi, you can usually configure the network without adding hardware. Raspberry Pi Imager can set up wireless while preparing boot media, and you can also configure it later using the desktop or command line. See Raspberry Pi’s wireless networking configuration instructions.

What to check before choosing an adapter
There is no universal adapter recommendation: compatibility depends on the board, operating system, adapter hardware and physical connection. Before buying, verify each of these points:
- Exact board: Confirm the model and variant, especially distinctions such as Zero versus Zero W.
- Wi-Fi band: Match the adapter’s supported band to your router or access point. Raspberry Pi notes that some adapters and some Pi models do not support 5 GHz.
- Raspberry Pi OS support: Check that the adapter’s chipset has driver support for your OS setup. A connector that fits is not proof that the adapter will work.
- Connection arrangement: Confirm the board has a suitable USB host connection. On boards that need an OTG arrangement or an additional adapter, include that in the plan.
- Power and space: Check that the board’s power setup can support the adapter and that the physical arrangement is workable.
- Actual need: If built-in Wi-Fi already supports your network, an adapter may add hardware without solving a demonstrated problem.
If built-in Wi-Fi does not appear
Do these checks before treating missing Wi-Fi as a reason to replace or supplement the hardware:

- Identify the board variant. Confirm whether it is a model with built-in Wi-Fi; a Zero and Zero W are different in this respect.
- Check the network band. A 2.4 GHz-only Pi cannot join a network using only 5 GHz. Verify the band your router or access point provides.
- Set the WLAN country where required. Raspberry Pi says the correct WLAN country must be configured before wireless networking is enabled on applicable dual-band devices. This also allows the device to select permitted 5 GHz frequencies. Follow the official configuration instructions.
- Use a current setup method. Configure wireless through Raspberry Pi Imager, the desktop or the command line as described in the official documentation. The older method of placing
wpa_supplicant.confin the boot folder is unavailable from Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm onward. - Only then investigate hardware. If the board lacks built-in Wi-Fi, or a verified requirement is unmet, consider a compatible adapter and check its driver, band, connection and power requirements.
Built-in Wi-Fi, USB adapter or Ethernet?
Choose based on the board and network rather than assuming one connection method is always better.
| Option | Best fit | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in Wi-Fi | A board with wireless that supports the network band you need. | Exact model, band and WLAN country configuration where applicable. |
| USB Wi-Fi adapter | A board without built-in Wi-Fi, or a confirmed requirement not met by its radio. | OS driver compatibility, band, USB/OTG connection and power. |
| Ethernet | A board with an Ethernet port and access to a wired network. | Whether the board has Ethernet and the cable can reach the network. |
The official documentation establishes these connection options and model specifications, but it does not establish that a USB adapter will be faster or provide better reception than a particular Pi’s built-in radio.
