No—not for every basic Galaxy phone function. You can complete core setup without treating a Samsung account as a universal prerequisite, but Samsung apps and services may require you to sign in. Whether you should create one depends on the features you want, especially Samsung services, device finding, and Samsung-account backup or sync. Exact setup screens and availability vary by device, software version, and region.
What you can do without a Samsung account
Samsung’s US setup guidance presents Wi-Fi, data transfer, Google Account sign-in, and lock-screen setup separately from adding a Samsung account. It describes signing in as the way to access features that require that account, rather than as a condition for every basic phone task. The exact setup flow varies by model and software. Samsung’s account-benefits page and its setup guidance explain the account’s role; account sign-in is distinct from a Google Account, which serves a separate purpose in the setup flow.
Which features may require an account?
Some Samsung services are account-gated. Samsung identifies Galaxy Store, Samsung Pay, Bixby, and SmartThings Find among services available through a Samsung account, while noting that particular apps, features, and availability differ. Check the sign-in requirement for the specific service you want to use rather than assuming every Samsung app has the same rule. Samsung’s US account FAQ lists example services, and Samsung Canada’s sign-in FAQ states that some apps, services, and features require sign-in.

Finding a lost Galaxy device
If you want to use SmartThings Find or Samsung Find, Samsung’s US guidance says the phone or tablet must have a Samsung account added, remote controls enabled, and a stable network connection; the device must also be turned on for the stated connected-device conditions. If it is powered off, Samsung says only its last known location is available. Account sign-in alone does not guarantee recovery. Samsung’s US lost-device guidance describes these prerequisites.

Offline finding is a separate, conditional capability. Samsung UK says Offline finding must be enabled and applies to supported device families and software versions. Nearby Galaxy devices may participate in locating a device, but this is not a guarantee of a location or the same thing as continuous live tracking. Confirm support for your particular model and region in Samsung UK’s SmartThings Find information.
Backup, restore, and sync
Samsung describes its account as enabling backup, restoration, and syncing across devices. The scope depends on the service and device; do not assume every kind of data or every Samsung product is covered. Samsung’s account-benefits page outlines these ecosystem benefits.

Other Samsung services and device management
A single account can provide access to Samsung services, including the examples above, and Samsung describes device management and sharing among its account benefits. Those are potential conveniences, not guarantees that each service is offered for every device or country. Samsung also says product registration is available for its products with exclusions including memory and storage devices, accessories, and components; registration should not be confused with a requirement to create an account to use a device.
Should you skip sign-in or create an account?

Add a Samsung account later
Skipping account sign-in during initial setup does not lock you out of adding one later. Samsung’s US instructions say you can add or manage an account from the device’s Settings. Menu wording may vary by software version; use the account or Samsung account section in Settings, then follow the on-screen prompts. Samsung’s account setup and management instructions provide the steps.
