No—you do not specifically need a PS5 to play Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6). Rockstar currently lists the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026. Rockstar’s official listing does not currently confirm versions for PS4, Xbox One, or PC.
Which consoles can play GTA 6?
Rockstar’s current GTA VI game page and platform and editions support article list PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The support article, last updated August 18, 2026, says: “You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.”
- PS5: Supported. Rockstar’s game page labels it “Plays Best On” PS5. That is Rockstar’s label, not an independent performance comparison.
- Xbox Series X and Series S: Both are included in the listed Xbox Series X|S platform family.
- PS4 and Xbox One: Neither appears in the current official platform listing, so compatibility for those older consoles is not confirmed.
- PC: No PC version or PC release date appears in the official listing reviewed. Treat PC release-date claims as unconfirmed unless Rockstar announces one.
Do you need to upgrade from PS4 or Xbox One?
If you own only a PS4 or Xbox One and want to play on a currently announced console platform, you will need access to a PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. Rockstar has not announced a PS4 or Xbox One version in the current listing, nor has it announced a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade path for GTA 6.

If you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S console, the listed platform information indicates that you do not need to buy a different console just for GTA 6. The Xbox option means you do not need to buy a PS5 solely to play the game.

Should you choose PS5 or Xbox Series X|S?
Both console families are officially listed. Rockstar’s “Plays Best On” label applies to PS5, but the official material cited here does not provide comparative performance testing or a recommendation between Xbox Series X and Series S. Choose based on which supported console you already own, your preferred platform ecosystem, and current console prices or bundles. Those personal and retailer factors are not rankings supplied by Rockstar.
Is the boxed version a disc?
No. Rockstar says the physical package contains a download code, not a disc. You will need to download the game after redeeming the code. Rockstar also says PlayStation codes are region-sensitive; buying from a retailer in the country associated with your platform account is the safer approach. Check the code’s region and redemption terms before purchase.

What are the release and preload dates?
Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026, as GTA 6’s release date. Rockstar announced that date in November 2025, and its current game and support pages reiterate it. The earlier December 2023 announcement said “Coming 2025”; that date was superseded by the later announcement.
