Usually, you need 10GbE for a NAS only when your workload is being held back by a slower network and every part of the connection can use the extra bandwidth. A 10GbE link can deliver about 9.4 Gbps (roughly 1.17 GB/s) in a network-only test, but that is not a guaranteed file-copy speed. Your NAS drives, client, protocol, and network setup can all reduce real transfers.

What speeds can you expect from 1GbE and 10GbE?

Ethernet link rates are measured in gigabits per second (Gbps); file transfers are commonly shown in megabytes per second (MB/s) or gigabytes per second (GB/s). Since one byte is eight bits, a 9.4 Gbps network result converts to about 1.175 GB/s before rounding.

Connection QNAP network-only iperf3 reference What it means for file copies
1GbE About 940 Mbps, or approximately 117 MB/s A file transfer may be slower; a 1GbE-negotiated connection can cap a faster NAS or NIC near this range.
10GbE About 9.4 Gbps, or approximately 1.17 GB/s This is a network-test reference, not a promise of 1.17 GB/s over SMB or in every NAS setup.

These network expectations come from QNAP’s troubleshooting guidance, which separates iperf3 network testing from file-protocol testing: QNAP’s NAS transfer-speed troubleshooting guide. QNAP also publishes single-link 10GbE SMB results around 1,177–1,181 MB/s for particular NAS models and test configurations; those vendor results should not be treated as typical for every NAS. See the model-specific TS-1264U-RP performance results and TS-664 performance results.

When is 10GbE worth it for a NAS?

Large transfers or bandwidth-heavy shared work

Moving large files, working with high-bitrate media, or serving several active users can make faster networking useful—provided the NAS storage and clients can keep up. Small files and light, occasional single-user access may not benefit much because file handling and storage performance can become the limiting factors instead.

Your current connection is already the bottleneck

Consider an upgrade when repeated transfers saturate your existing link and your NAS and client have the capacity to send and receive data faster. If the workload fits comfortably within the current network, 10GbE may add cost and configuration complexity without a noticeable improvement.

The whole path can support the faster connection

To use 10GbE, the NAS and client need compatible 10GbE interfaces, and the connection between them must negotiate at that speed. If devices connect through a switch, that part of the path also needs to support the intended link rate. A compatible NAS network card, client NIC, and possibly a 10GbE switch may all be part of the upgrade; a NIC alone is not enough.

What can limit real NAS transfer speeds?

  • Storage: Drives, SSDs, RAID layout, and the NAS’s ability to read or write data can cap throughput below the network’s capacity.
  • NAS and client performance: Processor limits, interface capabilities, and other configuration details affect how quickly data moves.
  • Protocol and workload: SMB or another file protocol, file size, read versus write activity, and concurrent users can change results.
  • Network configuration: The negotiated speed, link path, and support for features such as multichannel affect available bandwidth.

Vendor benchmark pages disclose particular models and test environments, so compare those details with your own setup rather than assuming a published result will transfer to your NAS. Synology’s performance page, for example, lists sequential SMB results alongside its tested system configuration.

Can multiple connections go faster than one link?

Sometimes, but the result depends on the NAS, client, supported features, and configuration. QNAP reports examples where two 10GbE links produce higher SMB throughput than one link on specific models. Separately, QNAP Labs reports 1,180 MB/s read and 1,183 MB/s write with four 2.5GbE SMB multichannel links, compared with 295 MB/s read and write for one 2.5GbE link. QNAP says results may vary by environment; these figures are examples, not guaranteed scaling. Details are on QNAP’s SMB multichannel feature page.

How to diagnose slow NAS transfers before upgrading

  1. Check the negotiated link speed on both endpoints. Confirm that the NAS and client actually connected at 10GbE, with the expected duplex setting. QNAP notes that a 10GbE NIC negotiated down to 1GbE or less is limited to approximately 117 MB/s.
  2. Test the network independently of file sharing. Run iperf3 between the endpoints before using SMB copy results to diagnose the network. QNAP’s guidance demonstrates a single-stream test and a four-stream run for aggregation testing.
  3. If iperf3 is healthy, inspect storage and file-transfer factors. Check local NAS disk throughput, the client’s capability, protocol settings, and the kind of files being transferred. A healthy network test with slow SMB transfers points to factors beyond raw network bandwidth.
  4. Keep tuning consistent across the path. Jumbo-frame or MTU changes are configuration-specific. If you test a different MTU, matching settings are needed across the network path; changing one device in isolation can cause connectivity or performance problems.

What to check before buying 10GbE hardware

  • Confirm that your NAS model supports a 10GbE card or has 10GbE built in; expansion cards require a compatible slot.
  • Check that the client has a compatible 10GbE interface and that the network path can negotiate at the intended rate.
  • Consider whether a direct NAS-to-client link suits your setup or whether multiple devices require a switch. The cited vendor benchmarks do not establish a particular switch recommendation.
  • Compare your workload and storage throughput with the network capacity you are adding. Do not assume that a faster link alone will make every file copy faster.
