Usually, no: connecting a second monitor does not automatically cause a meaningful FPS drop when the game renders on just one display. The result depends more on what the game and second screen are doing, which graphics device drives them, and whether the game spans multiple displays than on the monitor count alone. Microsoft’s Win32 documentation says multi-monitor support itself does not affect application performance in a single-display environment, while warning that multi-device and spanning-display configurations can affect performance.

When a second monitor is unlikely to lower game FPS

If the game runs on one monitor and the other is an idle part of an extended desktop, Microsoft’s documented behavior is reassuring: multiple-monitor support does not add high-performance graphics overhead to an application running in a single-display environment. That is a general description of Windows graphics behavior, not a benchmark promising identical results on every current PC.

There is no established universal percentage for how many frames a second monitor costs. Hardware, drivers, graphics-device routing, display settings, the game, and second-screen activity differ too much to infer a reliable FPS penalty from monitor count alone.

When a multi-monitor setup can change performance

The game spans both displays

A game stretched across two displays is doing something different from a game rendered on one screen with an extended desktop beside it. Microsoft cautions that performance may be greatly affected when a graphics-intensive application spans displays. AMD Eyefinity, for example, combines two or more displays into one large desktop surface. Whether a game supports or uses such a mode depends on its settings and configuration.

The displays use different graphics devices

Microsoft also notes that performance can be slightly affected in a multi-monitor system when an application runs on only one of multiple graphics devices. If your computer has more than one graphics device, check which one drives each display and which one renders the game before blaming the second monitor.

The second screen is doing work

Video playback, animated pages, browser content, capture software, and other active tasks are separate workloads. If performance changes while something is running on the second screen, investigate that activity and the game’s display mode rather than attributing the result automatically to the physical monitor. The cited official documentation does not quantify the FPS cost of any particular app or activity.

A narrow older NVIDIA behavior

NVIDIA documents a legacy full-clock behavior for driving multiple displays on GPUs from before the GeForce 600 series; its support page says GeForce 600-series and later are not affected by that specific limitation. This is a hardware-generation caveat about clock behavior, not an FPS measurement, and it does not establish that every newer setup has zero performance or power impact.

How to check whether your second monitor affects your FPS

  1. Set a baseline. Use the same game, scene, graphics settings, resolution, and primary monitor. Record average FPS and percentile FPS if your measurement tool supports them. NVIDIA FrameView lists both among its measurements.
  2. Change only the second-display state. Compare with the second monitor enabled and disabled while keeping the game workload the same. Avoid changing graphics settings or the scene at the same time.
  3. Record the display setup. Note whether Windows is extending or duplicating the displays, their resolutions and refresh rates, and whether the game is fullscreen, windowed, borderless, or spanning screens. Windows provides controls for display mode, arrangement, resolution, scaling, and refresh rate; recording those settings helps make the comparison meaningful.
  4. Check second-screen activity. If the difference appears only with the display active, test with its video, animations, browser tabs, or other workloads paused. This can help identify a workload-related change, but the available sources do not give a universal FPS cost for those activities.
  5. Check graphics-device routing. On a system with multiple graphics devices, verify which device drives each monitor and renders the game. A multi-device configuration is specifically identified by Microsoft as a condition that can affect performance.

Use repeated runs and compare like with like: a brief scene or measurement fluctuation is not enough to show that the second display caused a change. The controlled comparison above is a practical troubleshooting method, not a universal benchmark result.

What the official documentation establishes—and what it does not

Microsoft Learn’s “About Multiple Display Monitors” states: “The support for multiple monitors does not affect the performance of applications when running in a single display environment.” The same page qualifies that statement: performance is slightly affected in some multi-monitor systems when an application runs on only one of multiple graphics devices, and may be greatly affected when a graphics-intensive application spans multiple displays. The page was published in 2014; treat it as documented Windows graphics behavior, not a recent benchmark across every current GPU, driver, and game.

The official material cited here does not supply a controlled modern test isolating monitor count across current gaming hardware, refresh rates, operating systems, and workloads. It therefore supports no specific FPS-loss figure for adding an otherwise idle second monitor.
