Not as a general rule. Nintendo says some games need downloadable update data to play on Switch 2, and one current report describes a user-reported Donkey Kong Bananza copy that would not launch offline before an update. That report does not establish a new rule for physical games generally, and its exact cause is unresolved. The practical distinction is whether the card contains the game data or is a Game-Key Card that requires a download.
What you need to know about offline play
- Standard game cards and Game-Key Cards are different. Nintendo’s physical-software guidance distinguishes card formats. A Game-Key Card stores a key used to launch the game; the game data must be downloaded.
- Some games have title-specific download requirements. Nintendo says some games have free update data that must be downloaded for Switch 2 play. That does not mean every physical game needs an online update at launch.
- A reported Donkey Kong Bananza incident is not proof of a system-wide change. The report does not establish the card revision, software state, or definitive cause.
- Prepare and test the exact setup before going offline. Update the console and game while connected, and confirm the game launches in the configuration you plan to use.
How the physical card formats affect downloads
Standard game cards
Nintendo’s physical-software guidance distinguishes standard game cards from Game-Key Cards. Check the packaging and the game’s official information rather than assuming every physical release uses the same format. A downloadable update for a particular game is separate from the game’s base data being on the card.
Game-Key Cards
A Game-Key Card contains a key, not the full game data. Nintendo says downloading the game requires an internet connection and enough free space in the console’s system memory or a microSD Express card. The card must remain inserted to play the downloaded game. A microSD Express card can provide storage, but it does not provide the connection required for the initial download.
That initial game download is not the same thing as a later update. Once the download is complete, the card is still needed, and a separate title-specific update or other software requirement may apply.

What the reported Donkey Kong Bananza case establishes
TweakTown reported on October 3, 2026, that a user said a physical Donkey Kong Bananza copy would not launch without a software update. The report does not establish a general restriction on physical games or a confirmed change in Nintendo policy. It also raises a possible save-data explanation, but does not verify it as the cause.
The report does not establish the exact cartridge revision, console system version, installed game update, or save-data history involved. Without those details, the incident cannot show whether other copies or configurations behave the same way.

Examples of Nintendo’s title-specific update requirements
Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy update page says a software update released February 5, 2026, is required to play the game on Switch 2. This is evidence about that title, not all physical Switch 2 releases.
Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder update page lists an update released April 15, 2026. The page describes update changes; it does not say that this update is required to launch every physical copy offline.

How to prepare a game for offline play
- Check the card format. Look at the game packaging and its official software information to determine whether it is a standard game card or a Game-Key Card.
- Check the game’s requirements. Look for any stated Switch 2 update requirement and the game’s storage needs on Nintendo’s official information pages.
- Complete downloads while online. For a Game-Key Card, download the game using an internet connection and confirm there is enough system-memory or microSD Express storage. Install any available game and console updates before leaving connectivity.
- Test the actual configuration. With the intended card inserted and the game and console in their expected software state, disconnect from the internet and try launching before travel. This is a precaution, not a guarantee about every future update or configuration.
What to do if a physical game will not launch offline
- Reconnect to the internet and check whether the console or game indicates an update or download is required.
- If the release is a Game-Key Card, confirm that the game download is complete, adequate storage is available, and the card is inserted.
- Check the game’s official information for a title-specific Switch 2 requirement.
- If the game still will not launch, note the card edition, console system version, installed game version, and relevant save-data situation before contacting Nintendo Support. Those details are not established as the cause of the reported Bananza case, but they help describe the configuration accurately.
