Usually, no: a thermostat’s temperature sensor measures the air where it is placed; that reading does not tell the thermostat that a window caused the temperature change. Some smart-home systems may use separate devices or integrations, so “never” is too broad as a claim about every possible setup.

What a thermostat senses

A thermostat responds to inputs from its sensors. A temperature sensor reports a local temperature; an occupancy sensor can report whether a space is occupied. Neither input, by itself, identifies a window or explains why a room is warm or cold.

Google describes its Nest Temperature Sensor this way: “Your sensors detect the temperature of the room that they’re in and send it to your Nest thermostat.” When a Nest room sensor is active, its reading is used instead of the thermostat’s internal temperature reading. That makes the conditions in another room available to the thermostat, but it does not label the source of those conditions. Google’s Nest Temperature Sensor instructions

Why a window can still affect thermostat behavior

Sunlight through glass, drafts, or poor insulation can change the temperature near a window and affect comfort in that part of a room. A thermostat or room sensor may react to the resulting temperature, but the same reading could also come from an open door, another heat source, or other conditions. The reading alone cannot distinguish among those causes.

For that reason, placement matters. The Maryland Energy Administration advises putting a thermostat on an interior wall, away from direct sun, drafts, doorways, skylights, and windows. Google likewise warns against placing a Nest Temperature Sensor on or near a window or in direct sunlight; poor placement, including in a poorly insulated room, can make the system work harder and may increase energy use. Temperature, occupancy, and window sensors are different

Sensor or device What it can report or do What that does not establish
Temperature sensor Temperature where the sensor is located; a compatible thermostat can use a remote room’s reading. Whether a window is open, or whether a window caused the temperature.
Occupancy sensor Whether a space is occupied, which can help identify high-traffic rooms. Room temperature or window status, unless separate compatible sensors provide those inputs.
Window-status device Potentially, whether a particular window is open or closed, when included in a compatible smart-home setup. That the thermostat can receive or act on the information. Compatibility depends on the specific devices and system.
Smart blinds or awnings Can manage sunlight as a separate part of a smart-home setup. That the thermostat itself senses the window or controls the blinds.

ENERGY STAR distinguishes temperature sensing, which can help address room differences associated with insulation or sun exposure, from occupancy sensing, which identifies high-traffic rooms. Neither description means that a window is being recognized. ENERGY STAR smart thermostat guidance

What to do about a room that is too hot or cold

Use a compatible room temperature sensor for comfort balancing

If the problem is that the thermostat’s location does not reflect the room you care about, a compatible remote temperature sensor may let the system use that room’s reading. It still will not diagnose a window. For a Nest Temperature Sensor, Google recommends a regularly used room, roughly chest-height placement, and a location within wireless range; it also advises avoiding windows, direct sunlight, heat sources, and poorly insulated locations. Follow the instructions for the specific sensor and thermostat. Google Nest Temperature Sensor setup and placement

Check compatibility before buying

A room sensor must work with the thermostat, and the thermostat must be compatible with your heating and cooling system. ENERGY STAR notes that most, but not all, smart thermostats use a C-wire; lacking one can limit compatible models or require an adapter. Check the thermostat maker’s compatibility guidance for your equipment and wiring before purchase. ENERGY STAR smart thermostat guidance

Address sunlight separately

If direct sun is the main issue, blinds or awnings are a separate way to manage sunlight and heating or cooling needs. Their availability and control depend on the smart-home devices and integrations you choose; do not assume a thermostat can operate them. Australian Government guidance on smart homes

What sensor placement can and cannot solve

A room sensor can give a compatible thermostat information about temperature in a different location, which may help it respond to that room’s conditions. It cannot, on temperature alone, determine that a window is open, identify a draft, or prove that the window caused an uncomfortable reading. A poorly chosen sensor location can skew the reading and make the system work harder, so adding a sensor does not guarantee energy savings. Google Nest Temperature Sensor guidance
