No. A PS5 does not automatically improve the graphics of every game. Some PS4 games may benefit from PS5’s Game Boost, while visual changes from a game update, a native PS5 version, or a PS5 Pro setting depend on the specific title and hardware.
What can make a game look or run better on PS5?
These are separate mechanisms, and each can affect a different aspect of a game:
- Backward compatibility: Most PS4 games run on PS5, but compatibility alone does not mean their graphics have been upgraded. Sony says the overwhelming majority of the PS4 catalog of more than 4,000 games is playable; some titles are PS4-only or may have errors, unexpected behavior, or missing functionality. Check the current PS4 games playable on PS5 compatibility page or the PlayStation Store label for the exact title.
- Game Boost: PS5 applies this automatically to select PS4 games; there is no on/off toggle. Sony says it may improve or stabilize frame rates. Games with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution may also show higher fidelity, but these outcomes are title-specific—not a graphics upgrade across the PS4 library.
- A developer’s game update: A patch can change graphics, performance, or neither. Update availability by itself does not indicate what changed. Check the publisher’s notes for the game’s version.
- A PS5 version or upgrade: A native PS5 edition is distinct from running the PS4 edition through backward compatibility. Compare the edition you have installed and any publisher information about its features rather than assuming the PS4 version received the same changes.
- PS5 Pro’s PS4 image-quality setting: This console option is limited to PS5 consoles in the CFI-7000 model group and requires a display supporting 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. Sony advises turning it off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. Details are in Sony’s PS5 Pro PS4 game image-quality guide.
- Display output: Resolution, VRR, and 120 Hz output require support from the display and the game. Sony notes that VRR results vary by TV. A supported output mode does not, on its own, mean a game received new graphics features; see Sony’s PS5 video-output guidance.
How to check whether a PS5 update changed a game’s graphics
- Confirm the edition. Identify whether you are running the PS4 version, a native PS5 version, or an eligible upgrade. The distinction matters because backward compatibility, a PS5 edition, and a game patch are not the same thing.
- Check the installed update. On the PS5 Games home screen, highlight the game, press the Options button, and select Check for Update. Sony says games and apps also update automatically to the newest available version when started. These instructions are in Sony’s game-update guide.
- Read the publisher’s notes for that version. Look for a stated change to resolution, frame rate, graphics modes, or visual effects. Sony’s update instructions explain how to check for a patch; they do not say that every patch improves graphics.
- Check compatibility if the game will not run properly. Consult Sony’s current PS4-on-PS5 compatibility information, which identifies PS4-only titles and notes that some compatible games may not behave as expected.
- For the PS5 Pro PS4 image-quality option, check the hardware first. Verify that the console is in the CFI-7000 model group and that the screen supports 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. If gameplay becomes unexpected, disable the setting as Sony recommends.
What to compare when judging an improvement

For a particular title, the reliable answer comes from its edition and publisher’s version-specific notes. Broad PS5 compatibility guidance cannot establish what an individual patch changed.
