Yes. A matte screen protector can scratch, lose its coating, lift, or become cloudy, but there is no reliable universal rule to replace it after a set number of months. Replace it when damage or declining performance interferes with viewing, touch, a fingerprint sensor, or the protection and glare reduction you need.
How to tell when a matte screen protector needs replacing
Judge the protector by its condition and how it works, rather than by its age. Inspect it in ordinary use and check whether a mark is on the film or the display. A faint scratch visible only at certain angles may be cosmetic; a scratch that distracts you or interferes with a sensor is a stronger reason to replace it.
- Cracks, deep scratches, or lifting edges: Replace the film if damage affects viewing, leaves areas exposed, or makes the protector unreliable.
- Cloudiness or discoloration: A film that obscures the display or changes its appearance may no longer be serving you well.
- Persistent smearing or a sticky feel: These can be practical clues that the surface coating has worn, though they are not standardized tests.
- Touch or fingerprint-reader trouble: If the problem began after fitting a protector, check its compatibility before assuming the device has failed.
Samsung notes that some third-party tempered-glass protectors and films may affect display quality, touch performance, and other device functions. Its guidance also identifies issues such as damaged film, uneven coating, discoloration, and attachment or removal problems.
Is there a recommended replacement interval?
No universal lifespan or calendar interval is established for matte screen protectors. The available guidance does not quantify how long different films last under different handling and cleaning conditions. A particular product’s specifications should not be treated as a lifespan estimate for the category.

Replace the film when its condition or performance has declined enough to affect your use. A minor cosmetic mark alone does not prove that replacement is necessary.
What to check before buying a replacement
Choose a protector for your exact device model. Compatibility matters: a film designed for one tablet or phone should not be assumed to fit another, even if the screen sizes seem similar.

- Check dimensions and whether the protector leaves room for your case.
- Look for stated matte or anti-glare performance and the film material.
- Check compatibility with touch and fingerprint sensors.
- Review installation and removal details, and prefer compatible or manufacturer-certified accessories where the device maker recommends them.
For example, Getac lists a PET matte screen film cut for its UX10 tablet, with an anti-glare coating intended to diffuse light and reduce glare. Its fit and specifications apply to that model only; they do not establish compatibility with other devices.

If touch or fingerprint problems start after installation
- Check that the protector is intended for your exact device model and is fitted as directed.
- If the problem began with the new film, remove it or replace it with a compatible option, following the device maker’s instructions.
- If the issue continues after the accessory is removed, use device-specific troubleshooting or contact the manufacturer’s support.
