A CCD can be a strong choice when a camera’s measured response suits quantitative imaging, but “linear CCD” has two different meanings: a line-scan sensor captures one line at a time, while linearity describes how proportionally a sensor’s output changes with light. Neither meaning makes CCD cameras universally better than CMOS cameras.
What does “linear CCD” mean?
The phrase can describe sensor geometry or measurement behavior. They are related only by the word “linear,” not by the same technical property.
Line-scan describes how an image is captured
A line-scan sensor records one line of a scene at a time. Relative motion between the camera and subject, or the camera’s scanning mechanism, builds those lines into a two-dimensional image. This arrangement is useful for continuous materials and objects moving through inspection systems. National Instruments explains camera readout and sensor architectures in its camera overview; Toshiba lists linear sensors for scanners, barcode readers, print and fabric inspection, grain sorting, and bank-note recognition in its linear image sensor overview.
Linearity describes how output tracks light
A sensor has a linear response when its recorded signal changes proportionally with the amount of incident light over a specified operating range. This property matters for quantitative measurements such as photometry: if the camera’s gain changes with signal level, comparisons and calculations based on the pixel values can be misleading. Hamamatsu’s CCD linearity explanation notes that image operations such as ratios and shading correction also depend on reliable signal behavior.

Why response linearity can matter more than the CCD label
Linearity is a property of the complete imaging chain, not just the photosensitive material. Pixel response, sensor readout, signal conversion, and the analog-to-digital converter can all affect the values ultimately recorded. A camera should therefore be judged by its measured response across the range and settings used for the job, rather than by a claim that it uses a CCD alone.
Hamamatsu reports that scientific CCD cameras typically show nonlinearity of a few tenths of one percent across four or five orders of magnitude. The page does not state a publication year. It also says other sensors can show deviations of several percent; that comparison is a general statement on the page, not a result from a matched test of specific cameras.

Stay within the characterized range
Linearity does not extend from the dimmest possible signal through unlimited brightness. At very low illumination, response can become nonlinear; near a sensor’s full-well capacity, it can depart from proportional behavior before saturation. Saturation can also lead to blooming, in which charge spills into neighboring pixels. Hamamatsu advises limiting exposures to the linear region characterized for the particular sensor, since saturation can begin quickly and be difficult to predict.
How CCD and CMOS readout differ
Both CCD and CMOS sensors convert light into electrical signals, but they move and read those signals differently. In a CCD, pixel charge is coupled and transferred through the sensor toward output circuitry. CMOS sensors commonly convert charge to voltage at the pixels and support parallel readout. National Instruments also describes frame-transfer and interline-transfer CCD architectures; shielding and rapid charge transfer in frame-transfer designs can reduce smear.

These architectural differences create trade-offs rather than a universal winner. Teledyne Vision Solutions explains that CMOS parallel readout can use lower-bandwidth amplifiers and provide lower noise at high speed. Its overview says CCDs have been displaced in most machine-vision area and line-scan imagers. That is a manufacturer’s technical explanation, not an independent head-to-head test of arbitrary camera models.
When a CCD may be the better fit
A CCD can make sense when a particular camera’s measured performance fits the task—for example, when predictable response over the required signal range is important to quantitative imaging. Some CCD designs also offer features relevant to specialized instruments. But “CCD” alone does not establish that a camera has better linearity, lower noise, greater speed, or better image quality in the conditions that matter to you.

Line-scan sensors are used in industrial inspection and recognition systems, and both CCD and CMOS linear-sensor architectures exist. The application therefore does not, by itself, imply that the sensor must be a CCD.

A specialist CCD example is not a general-purpose camera
Hamamatsu lists the S12601-1007S as a back-thinned FFT-CCD area image sensor for spectrophotometry. The manufacturer says binning can make it function as a linear image sensor. Listed features include one-stage thermoelectric cooling, 24 × 24 μm pixels, line and pixel binning, peak quantum efficiency of at least 90%, and readout up to 5 MHz. It is a sensor component, not a complete general-purpose camera; the manufacturer page does not establish current stock or provide a complete camera system.
