A basic Ethernet switch adds wired ports and forwards traffic on your local network; it does not automatically isolate devices or replace your router’s firewall. A managed switch with VLAN support can help separate devices, such as smart-home gear from computers, but the separation only works as a security control when it is configured correctly and a compatible router, gateway, or firewall controls traffic between the segments.
What a LAN switch does—and does not do
A LAN switch connects wired devices on the same local network, such as computers, printers, televisions, and access points. An unmanaged switch generally forwards Ethernet traffic to the appropriate port. That connectivity function is useful, but it is not a security barrier: adding an ordinary switch does not, by itself, stop a compromised device from communicating with other devices on the LAN.
CISA’s network-partitioning guidance distinguishes unmanaged switches from managed switches, which can offer capabilities such as VLANs. The distinction matters: the security benefit comes from correctly configured segmentation and traffic controls, not simply from having a switch.
How a managed switch can help isolate devices
A managed switch that supports VLANs can assign wired devices to separate logical network segments. For example, a household could place smart-home devices in one segment and everyday computers in another. NIST explains that segmentation can be implemented physically with separate switches or logically with VLAN configurations. When properly configured, it can help enforce policies and isolate traffic at the Ethernet layer. These technical points come from NIST SP 800-82r3, an operational-technology security guide, rather than a consumer-switch performance study: NIST SP 800-82r3.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A VLAN is not, on its own, a complete security policy. Devices in different VLANs need a router, gateway, or firewall to route traffic between them, and that equipment must be configured to allow only intended communication. Without those controls, merely assigning VLAN labels does not ensure that traffic between groups is blocked or appropriately restricted.
When separating smart-home devices makes sense
NIST NCCoE recommends segmentation for home and small-business networks where possible, especially when IoT devices have known security risks. Its guidance says that such devices should be kept on a separate network segment from everyday computing devices that receive stronger protection through regular updates and security software. See NIST SP 1800-15 Volume B.

Segmentation can reduce a risky device’s access to other parts of the network, but it does not remove vulnerabilities from the device or guarantee that it is safe. NIST’s Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) project describes another possible control: where both the device and network support it, MUD can restrict a device to the network traffic needed for its intended function. That is not a feature supplied by a basic Ethernet switch. See NIST’s MUD project.
What to buy for the job
If your goal is only to add Ethernet ports, an unmanaged switch can provide connectivity. If you want to create separate wired groups, look for a VLAN-capable managed Gigabit Ethernet switch—and first confirm that your router, gateway, or firewall can support the VLANs and restrict traffic between them.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- VLAN support and setup: Confirm that the switch supports the VLAN configuration you intend to use and that you can manage it securely.
- Router or firewall compatibility: Check that your network equipment can handle the selected VLANs and apply rules to traffic between them. The switch alone does not supply this policy enforcement.
- Ports and link speed: Choose a port count and supported speed that suit the wired devices you need to connect.
- Management security: Protect access to the switch’s management interface as part of securing the equipment.
CISA describes VLANs and other segmentation controls as part of broader defense in depth, alongside controls such as router access-control lists, stateful packet inspection, and firewalls. See CISA’s communications-infrastructure guidance. It is general infrastructure guidance, not a claim that a consumer switch alone prevents hacking or malware.

Use segmentation to limit which devices can reach one another, while maintaining the protections that address other risks. Secure the router and firewall, keep device software updated, and use security software where appropriate.
