Yes. Kindle Store books linked to your Amazon account are available on a new Kindle when you register it to that same account. They may not download automatically: open your Library and download the titles you want. Reading position, notes and highlights can also sync to the new device when sync is enabled and the devices connect to the internet.

What transfers—and what does not

  • Kindle Store books: These are associated with your Amazon account, not just the old Kindle. After registering the new device to the same account, find them in the Library. Access to an account library does not mean every book is already downloaded to the device. Amazon explains how to find Kindle books in your library.
  • Reading position, notes and highlights: When sync is enabled and the device is online, Kindle sync can save and carry this information among linked Kindle devices and apps. Amazon says the data is saved to its servers. See Amazon’s Kindle sync guidance and sync settings and annotation details.
  • Handwritten Scribe annotations: Amazon says text-based annotations can be accessed across Kindle surfaces after sync, but handwritten annotations are currently accessible only across Kindle Scribe devices. Scribe notebooks are cloud-backed when the device is online and sync is enabled.
  • Files or changes stored only on the old Kindle: Do not assume these will appear on the new device. Account-library access and cloud sync are not a guarantee that every locally stored file or unsynced change will be copied.

Set up the new Kindle

  1. Register it to the right account. Use the Amazon account associated with the books. Amazon’s Kindle library guidance explains account access; see how to register a Kindle.
  2. Connect to the internet and sync. Run Sync on the Kindle, then open Library and switch to All. Download the titles you want available on the device. Sync may bring down pending books, but titles in the account library may still need to be downloaded. Amazon’s sync guidance.
  3. Check your notes and reading position. With sync enabled and a working internet connection, saved reading position, notes and highlights can sync to linked devices and apps. Amazon warns that annotations made while sync is off may be lost when it is turned back on. Amazon’s sync settings guidance.

If a book is missing

A missing download does not necessarily mean the book is lost. Check the account and delivery status before troubleshooting the old device.

  1. Confirm the account. Make sure the new Kindle is registered to the Amazon account that purchased or added the book.
  2. Check Library filters. In Library, select All and clear filters that might hide a title that is not downloaded.
  3. Sync and check the connection. Connect the Kindle to the internet and run Sync.
  4. Deliver the book manually. In Manage Your Content and Devices, find the title, select it and choose the registered Kindle for delivery; then sync the Kindle again. Amazon’s missing Kindle content guidance covers account, connection and library checks.
  5. Check the order. If a recent purchase does not appear in the account’s content list, check the digital order status.

Before resetting, selling or giving away the old Kindle

Sync the old Kindle while it is online, then verify that important reading progress and annotations are available on another linked Kindle or app. A factory reset removes personal data, downloaded content and content that has not synced; it also deregisters the device. Deregistering removes the Amazon account from that Kindle and temporarily cuts off access to the account’s digital content and Amazon services on it. Re-registering restores access. See Amazon’s guidance on resetting a Kindle and syncing Kindle data.
