WidgetKit can animate a change in the widget’s content, but Apple limits those animations to two seconds. The widget itself isn’t kept continuously active to update or animate in the background.
What WidgetKit animations do
A WidgetKit animation accompanies a change to the widget’s content; it isn’t a permanent display effect. Apple describes transitions for content such as text, images, symbols, and views entering or leaving the interface. Each animation in a widget or Live Activity can last no more than two seconds, according to Apple’s animation documentation.
On Always-On displays, the system suppresses animations to preserve battery. WidgetKit renders widget views on the system’s behalf in a separate process; an extension does not remain continually active simply because its widget is visible. See Apple’s WidgetKit documentation.
How and when widget content refreshes
A widget’s timeline contains dated entries and the data needed to render each one. Its reload policy tells WidgetKit the earliest time to request another timeline: the default atEnd policy requests one after the last supplied entry, after specifies another earliest request time, and never leaves later reload requests to the app.

These dates are not exact display deadlines. WidgetKit controls when it processes a reload, and a widget may update later than an entry’s date. Apple’s guidance says timeline entries should generally be at least about five minutes apart; that is design guidance, not a promise that a visible widget will change every five minutes. Details are in Apple’s guidance on keeping a widget up to date.
Refresh frequency is a flexible budget
Apple says a frequently viewed widget typically receives 40–70 refreshes in a 24-hour period—roughly one every 15–60 minutes. This is a typical range, not a guaranteed cadence for every widget. WidgetKit adapts budgets to factors including visibility, time since the last reload, and whether the containing app is active. Budgets apply per active configured widget, and the 24-hour window follows usage patterns rather than necessarily resetting at midnight. See Apple’s refresh guidance.

Can an iPhone widget update in real time?
Not as a continuously updating display. WidgetKit does not promise second-by-second updates, and its timeline scheduling can defer a refresh beyond the date of an entry. A widget is best suited to glanceable information that can be presented through scheduled timeline updates, rather than data that must visibly change every second.
Tapping a widget button or toggle does not create a live loop. Those controls run App Intents; after the interaction completes, the system reloads the widget’s timeline so it can show the result. The interaction updates content through the normal widget mechanism, rather than keeping the widget extension running.

When to use a Live Activity instead
For an ongoing, short-lived event that needs current information—such as the status of an event in progress—consider a Live Activity. It is a separate feature built with ActivityKit, not a widget timeline. Apple explains the distinction in its ActivityKit documentation and WidgetKit documentation.
A Live Activity is a different way to present event information, not a guarantee of uninterrupted animation. Apple’s two-second maximum applies to animations in both widgets and Live Activities.
