“Six seconds, then a reread” is a useful resume-writing shorthand, not a proven rule for every hiring manager. A current guide repeats the six-second claim and separately reports a 7.4-second average initial screen attributed to Ladders’ 2018 eye-tracking study, but that original study was not available for verification. The available evidence also does not establish that managers consistently return to reread promising resumes. Treat the numbers as a reminder to make your relevance, qualifications and results immediately findable.
What the six-second claim actually tells you
The six-second wording appears as a commonly repeated claim in How To Do’s “How to Write a Resume”, published May 24, 2026 and updated September 6, 2026. That page does not establish six seconds as a universal measured average.
The same guide separately attributes a 7.4-second average initial-screen duration to a 2018 Ladders eye-tracking study. Because the original study was not retrieved, describe this as a secondary attribution rather than an independently verified benchmark. Screening time can vary with the role, employer, application volume, recruiter and hiring process.
The “then reread” portion remains unconfirmed by the available evidence. A resume may receive a closer review later, but you should not design it around an assumed, consistent reread.

How to make a resume work during a quick scan
Put target-role relevance at the top
Use a specific headline and short summary that identify the role you want and the capabilities most relevant to it. Generic objectives force the reader to infer your fit.
Make qualifications easy to locate
- Place the most relevant experience near the top of the first page.
- Use standard section labels such as Experience, Education and Skills.
- Write concise bullets with a clear action, task and outcome.
- Include the exact tools, certifications or methods named in the job description when they genuinely match your background.
Lead with evidence of results
Specific outcomes give a fast reader something concrete to recognize: revenue influenced, processing time reduced, defects prevented, customers supported or projects delivered. Include the timeframe or scope when it clarifies the result, and never inflate a number.

Use visual hierarchy, not decoration
Consistent headings, readable spacing and restrained formatting help the eye find information. Dense paragraphs, unusual section names, crowded columns and decorative graphics can make relevant details harder to locate. The available evidence does not show that one named resume format universally outperforms another, so choose the layout that presents your qualifications most clearly for the target role.

- Open the resume at normal viewing size.
- Look away, then scan it briefly.
- Ask whether you can identify the target role, strongest relevant qualification and one credible result.
- Mark anything that drew attention before those points, such as a long profile, unrelated job detail or oversized design element.
- Rewrite or reorder the top section, then repeat the check.
What not to conclude from the statistic
- Do not assume every hiring manager spends exactly six or 7.4 seconds on every resume.
- Do not remove useful context solely to hit a stopwatch target.
- Do not expect a second read to rescue unclear wording or buried qualifications.
- Do not treat the secondary 7.4-second attribution as a verified result from the original Ladders study.
The takeaway for your resume
Optimize for rapid comprehension: show the role match, relevant qualifications and evidence of results in a clean hierarchy. The six-second figure can prompt that discipline, while the evidence does not justify presenting it—or a guaranteed reread—as a fixed law of hiring.
