No. Changing an armor piece’s appearance does not change the stats or perks of the equipment you have equipped. Use Edit Appearance to keep the gameplay benefits of your chosen gear while applying an available look. The feature is available from the beginning of the game on PlayStation and PC following the January 30, 2025 update.
How cosmetics and equipment affect gameplay
In God of War Ragnarök, your equipped equipment determines its gameplay properties: its stats, perks, and upgrade level. Edit Appearance changes how eligible equipment looks; it does not give that equipment the combat profile of the item whose appearance you selected. Santa Monica Studio’s official gameplay guide describes the feature as a way to combine equipment perks with a preferred look.

For example, if you prefer the stats and perks of one armor set but want your character to look like they are wearing another available set, equip the gear you want for gameplay and use Edit Appearance to choose the look. The appearance is not a separate build, and selecting it does not upgrade the equipped gear.

When can you use Edit Appearance?
The unlock requirement changed after launch. The original November 2022 guidance said armor had to reach Level 9 before its appearance could be edited. That is historical guidance, not the current rule: Santa Monica Studio’s January 29, 2025 update announcement says the January 30 update made Edit Appearance available from the beginning of the game for PlayStation and PC players.

That change concerns access to appearance editing. It does not mean every possible appearance is available immediately: some looks are tied to inventory, rewards, shops, edition content, or New Game Plus progression.
How transmog differs from upgrades and New Game Plus
Appearance editing and equipment progression are separate systems. Upgrading equipment changes its gameplay progression; editing its appearance changes its look. In New Game Plus, Level 9 equipment can be converted into Plus versions for additional progression, but that conversion is not the same as applying an appearance.

Santa Monica Studio’s New Game Plus guide also distinguishes the two: 13 remixed armor appearances, featuring new color combinations and styles, can be bought at Huldra Brothers’ Shop and applied to existing Level 9-or-higher armor. Separately, the new Berserker Armor appearance is acquired by defeating the Berserker King in New Game Plus.

Some looks are associated with edition or preorder content, but that does not make that edition content a prerequisite for using transmog. PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök FAQ lists Risen Snow Armor and the Atreus Risen Snow Tunic as preorder bonuses. It describes Darkdale Armor and Darkdale Attire as Digital Deluxe Edition content, identifying the attire as cosmetic.

These labels describe how particular content was offered; they do not change the distinction between equipped gear’s gameplay properties and its edited appearance.

PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök game page says the Dark Odyssey collection became available at no additional cost to owners on PlayStation Store and PC on March 22, 2025, in celebration of the series’ 20th anniversary. Availability can change, so check the current store listing for your platform. The cited announcement does not establish a complete item-by-item inventory or the gameplay stats of each item; treat the collection as appearance content rather than a different combat build.

How to choose gear and a look
- Choose equipment for gameplay. Compare the stats, perks, and upgrade level of the pieces you can equip.
- Choose a look separately. Use Edit Appearance to select an available appearance for eligible equipment.
- Check how a locked look is obtained. It may require a particular reward, shop purchase, edition content, or New Game Plus condition; an appearance unlock is distinct from upgrading the gear you wear.
