Yes, they can expose information that may be personal or identifying in context, but that does not mean every value shown by a Fire TV diagnostic tool is uploaded to Amazon. Amazon documents local diagnostic metrics, separately discloses operating-system device-use data, and says its software may provide logs and network diagnostics. Its public documentation does not map each local diagnostic field to an upload destination or schedule.
What Fire TV diagnostic tools show or record
Amazon’s Developer Tools menu includes System X-Ray, Snapshot, and Record & Share. Their outputs are not all the same: some show a live view, while Record & Share can keep a local history.
- System X-Ray displays instantaneous display, CPU, memory, and network metrics.
- Snapshot retrieves instantaneous metrics through Android Debug Bridge (ADB).
- Record & Share must be enabled in the Developer Tools menu. Amazon says it stores CPU, memory, network, and multimedia metrics in a local database history that can be dumped to the command line. Documented fields include timestamps, memory use, network signal and download speed, multimedia codec and playback details, and the foreground app’s package name. Its example settings allow recording intervals from 2 to 32 seconds and history from 1 to 16 hours; these are configuration ranges, not evidence of an upload or a universal default. Amazon Fire TV Developer documentation.
A foreground package name can identify which app is active, and performance or playback details may reveal aspects of device use. That makes the output potentially sensitive in context even though the documented fields are primarily technical metrics.
Network Status Tool
Amazon describes the Network Status Tool as a way to diagnose connectivity between the Fire TV device and router, and between the router and the internet. Some compatible devices also offer download-speed results and detailed network information, including data usage. Those additional options are not documented as available on every model. Does Amazon collect or receive diagnostic-related data?
Amazon separately says Fire TV’s operating system collects device-use data. Its Privacy Settings FAQ gives examples including home-screen navigation, selected device settings such as language, display size, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options, and apps or services being opened and closed. Amazon says it uses this data to provide device features, restore settings, troubleshoot technical issues, improve products and features, assess engagement, identify potential quality issues, analyze its business, and customize marketing offers.
Amazon’s device terms also list available memory, uptime, log files, network diagnostics, content usage, viewing data, search queries, location, voice information, connectivity, and signal strength as examples of information its software may provide to Amazon. The terms say information may be processed in the cloud and stored on servers outside the user’s country. Amazon Fire TV Privacy Settings FAQ · Amazon Device Terms of Use.

These disclosures show that device-use and diagnostic-related information can be part of Amazon’s data flows. They do not establish that every value visible in System X-Ray, Snapshot, or a Record & Share dump is transmitted. The public documentation cited here does not specify field-by-field transmission, destination, schedule, account association, or retention period for those diagnostic outputs.
How the different data paths differ
| Path | What is documented | What that does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Local diagnostic display | System X-Ray and Snapshot show instantaneous system metrics; Record & Share can save a local history, including a foreground app package name. | That a displayed or locally stored value is automatically uploaded. |
| Amazon operating-system data | Amazon says the OS collects device-use information, and its terms list logs and network diagnostics among information software may provide to Amazon. | That this is identical to every field from Developer Tools or that every field is always sent. |
| Third-party app activity | Amazon offers a setting to opt out of its collection of third-party app opening, closing, and duration data. | That the setting controls what each third-party app collects or transmits independently. |
| Developer logs | Amazon documents debug and verbose logging as disabled by default in the software release it describes; users can enable logging and collect output with ADB. | That ordinary diagnostic metrics and general device telemetry are the same as explicitly enabled verbose logs. |
Which Fire TV privacy settings can help?
Amazon documents these controls under Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings. The wording or availability can vary by product and software version.

- Collect App Usage Data: opts out of Amazon collecting data about opening, closing, and duration of use of third-party apps.
- Interest-based Ads: instructs apps using the device’s advertising ID not to use that ID to build advertising profiles or target interest-based ads.
These are purpose-specific controls, not a universal switch for all logs, diagnostics, Amazon-service processing, or third-party app collection. Amazon’s FAQ describes the limits of the Device Usage Data choice; it does not claim that all other collection or transmission stops when that control is changed. Amazon Fire TV Privacy Settings FAQ.
What changes if developer logging is enabled?
Amazon’s Fire OS developer documentation says debug and verbose logging are disabled by default in the software release it describes. It documents ADB commands for enabling those logs and collecting them with adb logcat. Amazon warns that the logging property persists across reboots. This is a separate consideration from the ordinary metrics shown by diagnostic tools.

A 2020 peer-reviewed study, “The TV is Smart and Full of Trackers: Measuring Smart TV Advertising and Tracking,” by Janus Varmarken, Hieu Le, Anastasia Shuba, Athina Markopoulou, and Zubair Shafq, examined apps on Roku and Fire TV. The researchers reported that hundreds of apps in their tested datasets exfiltrated personally identifiable information to third parties and platform domains. This is historical evidence about network traffic from the tested apps, not evidence that Fire TV’s built-in diagnostic screens upload their output, and not a current measurement of all Fire TV apps.
