Yes. A raised camera bump can make a phone rock on a flat surface if it becomes a rear contact point, and an exposed lens can be more vulnerable to scratches or breakage. But available evidence does not establish that one bump shape is more drop-durable than another. Desk wobble, lens damage, and a phone’s internal image-stabilization system are separate issues.
How a camera bump can make a phone wobble
Wobble is a matter of contact geometry. If a raised camera island or lens touches the table before the rest of the phone’s back, it can act as a pivot and keep the phone from resting level. The phone and case together determine which surfaces make contact.
This is a practical explanation of how shape can affect stability on a desk, not a measured comparison of phones. The sources available do not quantify how much different bump designs wobble or how common the problem is.
What a protruding camera means for lens durability
A lens that sits above the rear cover is more exposed to contact. Huawei says camera glass is often higher than the back cover, increasing the risk of scratches and breakage. The actual risk depends on the particular device and lens cover, as well as handling, the surface, and the impact.

Huawei describes its camera lens material as high-strength aluminium-silicon glass with pressure and scratch resistance, and says it uses extrusion, drop, and roller tests to check lens reliability. It also says some production phones are sampled for drop or roller testing. These are Huawei’s descriptions of its materials and process; the support page does not provide model-specific results or a protocol that would allow comparison of bump designs. Does bump shape determine drop durability?
Not on the evidence available. A general phone drop test cannot show that one camera-bump shape protects the camera better unless it isolates the camera assembly and compares relevant designs under described conditions.

Samsung describes testing samples at different heights and angles and on different surfaces, often with repeated drops, as well as tumbling tests and high-speed footage to examine falls and breakage. Its cited account describes general device reliability testing, not a camera-bump-specific comparison. Samsung’s description of Galaxy reliability testing therefore does not support ranking bump shapes.
Likewise, Corning reports that Gorilla Glass 6 survived lab drops from up to 1.6 meters onto hard, rough surfaces. That is a claim about a named glass product under Corning’s lab conditions; the reviewed page passage does not identify a year or full protocol, and the figure is not a test of a finished phone or its camera bump. Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6 page should not be read as a general phone-durability guarantee.

Water- or dust-resistance ratings and a materials list also do not establish drop resistance. Google’s Pixel specifications warn that protection is not permanent and that a phone is not drop- or tumble-proof; the information is model-specific and does not compare camera geometry. How to reduce direct contact with the camera
Huawei recommends a case that wraps around the camera-lens edge and advises keeping the device away from sharp objects such as keys and gravel. This is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee against damage. Huawei’s advice about protruding camera lenses gives its rationale.

- Choose a case made for the exact phone model, with a raised rim around the camera that extends beyond the lens edge.
- Check that the case does not obstruct the camera or flash.
- Judge camera coverage separately from full drop protection; a raised rim is not proof that the phone will survive a fall.
A lens cover or protector also needs to fit the exact model. The cited guidance supports edge coverage from a case, but does not establish that a generic protector or adhesive ring improves drop survival or preserves image quality.

Optical image stabilization (OIS) is an internal camera mechanism, not an effect of the external bump touching a table. Apple explains that OIS moves a lens in response to gyroscope readings on some iPhone models; closed-loop autofocus on applicable models uses sensors to account for gravity and vibration. Apple warns that extended exposure to high-amplitude vibration within certain frequency ranges may degrade these systems and reduce image quality. Its advice is relevant to exposure such as mounting a phone on a motorcycle, not evidence that a particular bump shape makes a phone unstable. What to compare when choosing a phone or case
- Flat-surface contact: Check whether the back rests level or the camera island becomes a pivot, with the intended case fitted if you plan to use one.
- Lens exposure: Look at how far the lens or surround rises above the back and whether the case lip extends beyond it.
- Drop-test evidence: Look for model-specific testing that identifies height, orientation, surface, sample size, and what counted as failure. General device testing is not a camera-module comparison.
- Packaging and camera capability: Camera hardware affects how a rear module is packaged, but the available sources do not quantify an ideal bump size or show that a larger bump necessarily means better photos or worse durability.
- Case compatibility: Confirm that a raised rim, lens cover, or protector fits the exact model and does not obstruct the camera or flash.
