Yes. Laboratory studies have found that some tested baby feeding bottles release microplastic particles, but the headline figure—up to 16.2 million particles per litre—comes from specific polypropylene-bottle formula-preparation scenarios. It is not a count for every bottle or a measured amount every baby ingests. The studies do not establish whether these exposures harm infant health, and they are not a reason to skip safe cleaning or formula preparation.
What did the 2020 baby-bottle study find?
In a 2020 study published in Nature Food, Li and colleagues tested polypropylene (PP) infant feeding bottles during formula preparation. In the scenarios they tested, particle concentrations reached as high as 16,200,000 per litre. The researchers also found that sterilization and exposure to high-temperature water significantly increased release under their test conditions. Read the study in Nature Food.
The result is specific to the tested PP bottles and preparation scenarios. It does not show that every PP bottle releases that maximum, that all bottle materials behave the same way, or that an infant consumes the maximum concentration.

The paper also modeled potential exposure for infants up to 12 months across 48 regions. Its regional estimates ranged from 14,600 to 4,550,000 particles per capita per day. These are modeled estimates, not measurements of individual babies’ daily intake. They are also a different measure from the laboratory concentration per litre, so the two figures should not be treated as interchangeable.

Particle counts alone do not establish a health outcome. The study authors said further assessment was needed to determine whether exposure at the reported levels poses a risk to infant health. The cited evidence does not establish that the particles cause illness, nor does it establish that the exposure is harmless.
What did a separate bottle-use study find?
A 2021 study examined particles released during repeated opening and closing of selected feeding and water bottles. After 100 opening/closing cycles, it reported 53–393 microparticles per millilitre in its tested samples. Release varied by product; the tested thin-necked glass bottles released fewer microparticles than the tested thick-necked plastic bottles. Read the 2021 study.

This was a separate use test, not a replication of the 2020 formula-preparation experiment. Its counts should not be compared directly with the per-litre results from that study. It also does not show that all glass bottles release fewer particles in every use condition, that glass is particle-free, or that switching bottle material improves health.

Should you stop using plastic bottles or change how you prepare formula?
The studies do not establish that caregivers should stop using plastic bottles. If you are considering glass or another material, weigh practical factors alongside the limited particle-release evidence: follow the bottle maker’s cleaning and sterilization instructions, and consider handling and breakage. The cited comparison involved selected products and does not rank all bottles currently sold or identify a medically safest product.

Do not skip cleaning, sterilization, or safe formula preparation to reduce potential particle release. WHO/FAO guidance identifies cleaning and sterilizing feeding and preparation equipment as important steps for safe preparation of powdered infant formula. See the WHO/FAO powdered-formula guidelines.
For U.S. caregivers, FDA guidance advises using safe water, following the formula label’s mixing directions, cleaning feeding parts appropriately, and not warming formula in a microwave because uneven heating can create hot spots that burn an infant. FDA identifies sterile ready-to-feed formula as the safest option for formula-fed infants at higher risk of Cronobacter infection who are not receiving breast milk; ask your clinician about circumstances specific to your infant. How does FDA food-contact oversight fit in?
FDA says it evaluates food-contact packaging materials, including baby bottles and nipples, before market entry. In a 2019 update, the agency said a sample review of effective food-contact notifications affirmed the reviewed materials safe for their intended use. That general regulatory context does not directly resolve the long-term health implications of the specific microplastic exposure estimates reported in the bottle studies. Read the FDA update.
