Apple says its new Apple Watch Audio Intelligence features do not create or store audio recordings. It says raw audio is processed inside a hardware-isolated Secure Exclave and immediately deleted. That is Apple’s description of the design, not an independent audit—and it does not describe every Apple feature that handles speech. Siri and Dictation may use Apple servers, with separate settings and privacy terms.
What Apple says the new Watch features do
In its September 2026 announcement, Apple introduced three Audio Intelligence features for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, which use the S11 chip with Secure Exclave:
- Sound Recognition alerts people who are deaf or hard of hearing to sounds such as sirens, alarms, doorbells, or a baby crying, including when their iPhone is not with them.
- Live Rewind lets a user double-press the Digital Crown to see a text snippet of the previous 15 seconds of conversation.
- Siri Recap, when enabled, can create a title and key points from a conversation for later review.
Apple says the Secure Exclave is a dedicated, hardware-isolated compartment. According to Apple, raw audio used by these features is inaccessible to the operating system, apps, the user, and Apple, and is immediately deleted. Apple also says the features do not identify or attribute speakers.
That distinction matters: Live Rewind’s text snippet and Siri Recap’s summary are outputs derived from audio, not the raw audio recording itself. Apple says those snippets and summaries are end-to-end encrypted in the Siri app with iCloud syncing and are not accessible to Apple. It describes Siri Recap as a short, high-level summary rather than a transcript, designed to exclude sensitive information such as financial information or government-assigned identifiers.

These are Apple’s stated design and privacy claims. The available announcement does not establish an independent technical assessment of the new Watch implementation.
How the Watch features signal use and give you control
Apple says users choose whether to enable each Audio Intelligence feature and can choose exactly where and when Siri Recap takes notes. Siri Recap can also be turned off through Control Center. Apple says Live Rewind plays an audible chime even if the watch is silent, and shows a full-display animation and microphone indicator when activated.

Apple’s September announcement says Live Rewind and Siri Recap are expected to arrive in beta later in 2026. Availability can change; check Apple’s Watch announcement and current availability information before relying on a feature being available for your device, region, or language.
Siri and Dictation have different processing paths
Do not assume the Watch features’ Secure Exclave and deletion claims apply to Siri or Dictation generally. Apple says your device indicates in settings whether speech is processed on device. Otherwise, Siri audio may be sent to Apple servers. Apple says audio is not stored by default unless you opt in to the relevant improvement setting. The path depends on the feature, device, and settings.

Apple’s current notice for Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence describes a separate opt-in program. Depending on the interactions and services involved, it can cover audio and text from Siri, Dictation, and Translate, including transcripts, responses, and related request data. Apple says this information may be used to improve products and models; identifiers are random and device-generated rather than tied to an Apple Account, and a subset of data may be reviewed by Apple employees. Those terms concern the opt-in program, not every use of Siri or Dictation.
Where Private Cloud Compute fits
Apple says Apple Intelligence determines whether a request can be handled on device or requires Private Cloud Compute (PCC). For requests handled by PCC, Apple says personal data is not stored there or made accessible to Apple. This describes Apple’s stated architecture for requests routed to PCC; it does not mean all Apple audio is processed locally or that every audio feature uses PCC. Apple also says outside experts can inspect PCC server software.

“Audio AI” covers more than the new Watch features
Apple has also announced Apple Music AutoMix, which analyzes audio to create transitions between songs, and Enhance Dialogue in Apple Podcasts, which isolates voices. The cited announcement does not establish that either feature uses the Watch’s Secure Exclave or has the same audio-retention behavior. Treat their processing and privacy details as separate questions rather than extending the Watch claims to them.

Check the relevant settings on your device
- Check Siri and Dictation processing: Open Siri and Keyboard settings and look for whether speech is processed on device. Apple’s labels and paths can vary by software version.
- Review the improvement opt-in: Look under Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements for Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence. Review its current description before deciding whether to participate.
- Choose Watch features individually: Decide whether to enable Sound Recognition, Live Rewind, or Siri Recap, and review Siri Recap’s controls for where and when it takes notes.
- Inspect Apple Intelligence activity if useful: Apple says transparency logging can be enabled in settings to inspect a report of processing. The exact control may differ by software version.
