AMD’s official RX 9000 Series announcement specifies HDMI 2.1b and DisplayPort 2.1a, not HDMI 2.2. HDMI 2.2 does include an 80Gbps bandwidth category, but that standard-level capability does not establish support on any particular Radeon card.
What AMD has confirmed about Radeon display output
In its February 28, 2025 RX 9000 Series announcement, AMD says the cards’ Radiance Display Engine supports DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b. It also advertises output up to 8K at 144Hz, 12-bit HDR and full REC2020 color space. Those are AMD’s launch claims for the announced display engine; they do not confirm HDMI 2.2 or an 80Gbps HDMI link.
AMD’s earlier RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT announcement specifies HDMI 2.1a. The differing version labels are a useful reminder that display outputs should be checked against the exact GPU and card, rather than inferred from the Radeon name alone.
What HDMI 2.2’s 80Gbps figure means
HDMI Licensing Administrator’s HDMI 2.2 specification overview says the specification uses next-generation Fixed Rate Link technology and supports up to 96Gbps. HDMI.org describes “Ultra96” as a feature designation manufacturers are encouraged to use for HDMI 2.2 products whose maximum bandwidth is 64Gbps, 80Gbps or 96Gbps. The 80Gbps figure is therefore one possible product bandwidth under the standard; it is not a claim that every HDMI 2.2 product, or any Radeon GPU, operates at that rate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HDMI.org also says HDMI 2.2 is backward compatible with earlier HDMI versions. Compatibility does not mean an older source device gains the newer standard’s features: the GPU, cable and display all need to support the relevant link for it to be used.
How to check a specific Radeon card
- Identify the exact card. Record the GPU model and, for an add-in board, the manufacturer and precise board SKU. A GPU family name alone may not identify the outputs on a partner’s card.
- Check AMD’s model specifications. Use AMD’s official Graphics Card Specifications and Graphics Specifications resources to inspect the model-level output fields.
- Check the board partner’s specification for that SKU. Confirm the HDMI version and, if the claim is specifically 80Gbps, an explicit maximum HDMI bandwidth. Do not treat a general statement about the HDMI 2.2 standard as proof of the card’s implementation.
- Verify the display and cable requirements. Check the monitor or TV’s supported input mode and the cable certification required for the intended link. HDMI.org says an Ultra96 HDMI cable is required to support an Ultra96 product’s maximum bandwidth.
The official material available here does not identify a Radeon model with HDMI 2.2 or 80Gbps HDMI output. Unless an AMD or board-partner specification explicitly confirms both for the exact card, regard the claim as unverified.

Will an Ultra96 cable add HDMI 2.2 to a Radeon?
No. A cable cannot upgrade the GPU’s output standard or bandwidth. An Ultra96 cable is relevant when connecting products that support an Ultra96 mode; the GPU and display must also support the required link. With an older or lower-capability source, the connection remains limited by that source and the other equipment.
