No. An AI assistant does not have personal habits or use an agent for itself. But software agents can help people complete multi-step work, and what they can do—and who can access them—depends on the product and its permissions.

What does “personal agent” mean?

The phrase can mean an AI tool an individual uses, or an agent customized to carry out that person’s tasks. Either way, an agent is software—not a private assistant with its own habits, preferences, or personal setup.

Unlike a chatbot that mainly responds to prompts, an agent can work through multiple steps toward a goal. Depending on the system, that may involve researching information, using connected tools, or taking actions. The label alone does not tell you what an agent can access or do.

What can an AI agent do?

Research and multi-step tasks

OpenAI’s announcement of ChatGPT agent described a system that could use a visual browser, text browser, terminal, and API access to research and act across tasks. Users could interrupt and redirect its work. OpenAI characterized it as designed for iterative, collaborative workflows. Read the announcement.

Coding

Codex is described by OpenAI as an AI coding agent for writing, reviewing, and shipping code. Access to Codex and Codex Cloud depends on the account and plan. Check OpenAI’s Codex plan information.

Building custom agents

For developers, OpenAI documents several ways to build or run agent systems, including the Agents API, Agents SDK, and Responses API. These are development options, not interchangeable consumer features; the right choice depends on the application being built. See the Agents documentation.

Shared workplace workflows

OpenAI announced workspace agents for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu on April 22, 2026. These shared agents can use connected tools and continue work across steps. Availability and workspace controls apply, so an individual should not assume the feature is enabled for their account. Read the workspace agents announcement.

Is a personal agent available to use now?

Availability changes, and product names can be confusing. OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent help page currently says ChatGPT agent is no longer available and points readers to ChatGPT Work for longer tasks, while also retaining older instructions and eligibility details for agent mode. Because the page contains conflicting time-sensitive guidance, confirm current availability in the product rather than relying on the older instructions alone. Check the current ChatGPT agent help page.

More broadly, access can depend on the product, account, plan, or—at work or school—the organization’s settings. A description of a capability does not guarantee that it is available to every user.

What should you check before letting an agent act?

An agent’s usefulness depends partly on what it can reach. Connected accounts and tools may expose sensitive information or let the agent take actions. Before starting a task, check which tools are connected, what permissions they have, and whether you can review or interrupt the work. Supervise consequential actions rather than assuming an agent’s output or decisions are correct.

  • Limit access to the accounts and tools the task actually needs.
  • Review important steps and results, especially before an action affects other people, money, or important data.
  • Confirm the feature is available under your account or workspace settings.
