The original DMZ and Warzone Battle Royale were both part of Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, but they asked players to pursue different outcomes. In DMZ, you chose activities, collected items and tried to extract alive; in Battle Royale, you fought to outlast the other players as the playable area shrank. This comparison covers the original DMZ beta design, not the separate DMZ version announced for Modern Warfare 4 in 2026.

What’s the difference between DMZ and Warzone?

DMZ was an extraction mode built around objectives and getting out with what you found. Warzone Battle Royale was a last-team-standing contest. The difference was not simply that one mode had missions: it was what counted as success, and what happened to your carried items when a deployment ended.

Feature Original DMZ (Warzone 2.0 beta) Warzone Battle Royale
Main goal Complete faction missions or other activities, gather valuable items and exfiltrate alive. Survive opposing players and the shrinking circle to win the match.
Match flow Deploy into an open environment with varied entry points and optional tasks; players could pursue different objectives. Drop from a plane and compete in a match shaped by the circle’s collapse.
Loot and risk Manually collected items went into a backpack. Successful exfil let players carry items forward; death cost nonpermanent backpack contents. Players scavenged equipment and used or built a loadout for the current match. The central objective was survival, not extracting with a carried stash.
Threats PvPvE: enemy Operators and AI combatants could threaten objectives and extraction. Primarily a player-versus-player survival contest, though some launch-era shared features involved AI at Strongholds.
Best suited to Players who enjoy flexible objectives, exploration, mission progress and the tension of extraction. Players who prefer a focused contest with a clear winner and escalating pressure.

This table describes the original 2022 implementation; it does not establish current availability or guarantee that the 2026 version uses the same mechanics. Activision’s original DMZ overview and Warzone 2.0’s Battle Royale guide outline the two launch-era designs.

Is DMZ like Battle Royale?

They shared a Call of Duty setting and some systems, but the overall match loop was different. DMZ was PvPvE: players had to account for both rival Operators and AI while working toward tasks and an extraction point. Battle Royale centered on surviving other players and the circle until a winner remained.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Some features were not exclusive to either mode. Proximity chat and Strongholds appeared in both at launch, with mode-specific uses and objectives. Their presence does not make the modes equivalent; the defining distinction was whether the match revolved around completing a deployment and extracting or winning the survival contest. Activision’s Warzone 2.0 guide describes Battle Royale features, while its DMZ overview explains the extraction mode.

Do you keep your loot in DMZ?

In the original beta, successful exfil mattered because it let you carry backpack items forward for later use. If you died before extracting, you lost nonpermanent items in that backpack. This created a choice Battle Royale did not frame in the same way: continue pursuing objectives and risk what you had collected, or leave while you were still alive.

That description applies to the original DMZ design only. In a June 7, 2026 interview, Studio Multiplayer Creative Director Joe Cecot described the forthcoming Modern Warfare 4 DMZ as having “persistent inventory” and an upgradeable “Forward Operating Base (FOB).” Those are announced design details, not confirmation of final release behavior. Xbox Wire’s interview identifies this as a new iteration planned to launch alongside Modern Warfare 4 later in 2026.

Which mode should you choose?

  • Choose the original DMZ-style experience if you want flexible tasks, exploration, AI encounters and the risk-reward decision of extracting with collected items.
  • Choose Battle Royale if you want a direct competitive goal: survive the other players and the shrinking circle to win.

Both modes can involve firefights and shared systems, but their success conditions are different: DMZ rewards completing an outing and getting out; Battle Royale rewards being the last survivor or team standing.

What “DMZ” means in 2026

The name now refers to two distinct iterations. The original DMZ was introduced with Warzone 2.0 in 2022. Xbox Wire reported on June 7, 2026 that a new DMZ is planned alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 later that year. Cecot called it an “action extraction shooter” and described interactive stations and character progression across multiple deployments, alongside persistent inventory and an upgradeable FOB. These are announced plans, not independently verified final features.

Do not assume legacy beta mechanics describe the forthcoming version. The cited official material establishes the original mode’s design and the announced direction of the new one; it does not establish whether the original mode remains downloadable or supported on every platform.
