Can you play the new DMZ solo?
Yes. In its June 7, 2026 reveal, Xbox Wire’s interview with the developers confirms that players can deploy solo or with a squad. The upcoming extraction shooter is included with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, whose announced release date is October 23, 2026.
That establishes solo deployment as an option, not a separate solo ruleset. The preview does not say how matchmaking or squad fill will work, what the squad-size limit will be, or whether solo players will face adjusted objectives or difficulty. Those details matter when judging which option is easier.
Solo or squad: how to choose

Choose solo if independence matters most
Solo is the more natural fit if you want to choose when to pursue a mission, explore, or disengage without discussing each move with a party. Go in prepared to manage situations without a teammate physically alongside you; the developer describes solo play as a “very interesting and dangerous world.” How that risk translates into the final rules remains to be established.

Choose a squad if coordination is part of the fun
A squad is a better fit if you enjoy planning with others, working toward shared objectives, and reacting together to encounters. That can make play more social, but it does not prove that squad play is safer or easier: the available official information provides no comparative survival data, difficulty scaling, or confirmed recovery rules.

The overview also describes persistent inventory and a Forward Operating Base (FOB) that expands as players progress, with “over a dozen stations” planned for the FOB. It does not say that any of these activities or progression features require a particular party size.
What not to assume from the older MWII DMZ
The original DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II had mechanics that help explain why solo play could carry greater exposure, but they are historical—not confirmed rules for the upcoming mode. Activision’s 2022 overview of MWII DMZ described it as a single-life mode: backpack items were lost on death, a solo player who went down had no teammate as a safety net, and squadmates had opportunities to revive a downed or eliminated teammate. Exfiltration was the route to keep gathered items.

The original mode also included faction missions, side objectives, AI and enemy Operators, and optional assimilation in squad-based matches. At launch, Call of Duty’s Season 01 patch notes listed Trios, let solos or duos choose not to fill, and described assimilation up to six players per squad. Do not treat those launch-era squad or revive details as evidence of how Modern Warfare 4 DMZ will work.
