OBS is free encoder and controller software, but it does not provide a streaming server: it sends a stream from your computer or hosted machine to the streaming platform. A 24/7 setup also has costs for encoding hardware or compute, upload or transfer, storage, monitoring, and recovery work. Whether a VPS, home PC, hosted OBS, or managed prerecorded-streaming service makes sense depends on your source and broadcast requirements.
What OBS and a VPS Actually Provide
OBS Project Help Portal explains: “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service.” In a typical setup, the source or media feeds OBS, OBS encodes and sends the stream to the platform’s ingest, and the platform distributes it to viewers. A VPS changes where OBS runs; it does not remove the need to configure the stream or maintain the path to the platform.
That distinction matters when estimating costs. A VPS price is only one part of a DIY setup. Check whether its compute can sustain your chosen encoding workload, whether it has any needed GPU capability, how much transfer and storage are included, and who handles setup, updates, monitoring, and recovery.
Why a Stream Drops
Moving OBS to a VPS does not automatically fix dropped frames. The OBS Project’s troubleshooting guidance says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. It recommends testing another ingest server and setting bitrate according to stable upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. Its suggested starting point of 75% of total upload speed is guidance to test, not a universal guarantee.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
OBS describes dynamic bitrate adjustment as a way to lower bitrate when a connection cannot keep up. It can reduce dropped frames, but does not solve the underlying connection problem and may reduce video quality. Consider connection stability, upload capacity, ingest choice, and stream settings before blaming OBS or assuming a VPS will resolve the issue.
Compare the Options for Your Workload
These approaches do different jobs. A prerecorded playlist does not require the same setup as an always-on OBS instance for live or IRL input. Compare providers and self-hosted options against the same source, quality, platform, and operating needs.

Cloud-OBS displays plans at €24.99 per month for up to 1080p at 30 fps and €49.99 per month for up to 1080p at 60 fps. Its page lists OBS running 24/7, ingest, and remote control for those plans. These are provider-published terms, not an independent comparison of service quality or uptime.
OMC Cloud advertises VPS plans starting at $4 per month, optional NVIDIA GPU transcoding, and a 99.995% uptime SLA. The starting price is not a complete quote for a particular OBS workload, and the SLA does not establish the performance of a configured stream. Treat these as provider claims and check the plan details.

- Define the stream. Record whether the source is prerecorded media or live input, the platform, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and whether you need multistreaming.
- List infrastructure costs. For a home PC, estimate incremental electricity and consider hardware wear and heat. For a VPS, price the compute and encoding capability, transfer, storage, and backups required.
- Add operations. Include your time for initial setup, software updates, monitoring, troubleshooting, and restarting or recovering a failed stream. For a managed plan, check what support and recovery features are actually included.
- Compare equivalent offers. Check plan limits, ingest, remote control, supported sources, storage, service terms, and any additional costs. Recheck provider prices and features before committing.
This comparison is more useful than assuming that every stream needs the same hardware or that a managed service is automatically cheaper. A technical operator may prefer a VPS for control; someone with a suitable existing computer may find home hosting workable; and creators with different needs may benefit from hosted OBS or a managed prerecorded playlist.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Setup Should You Choose?
- Choose a home PC if it already meets your encoding needs and the power, internet, and hands-on operating burden work for you.
- Choose a DIY VPS if you can configure and maintain the environment and have verified that the instance, transfer allowance, and storage suit your stream.
- Consider managed OBS hosting if you need an always-on OBS environment or a workflow such as live or IRL streaming. Verify the exact ingest, resolution, frame-rate, control, and recovery features.
- Consider managed prerecorded streaming if you want to broadcast a supported media playlist without operating your own OBS machine. Check media, platform, storage, quality, and plan limits.
A Raspberry Pi or other small single-board computer may suit some simple, low-power workloads, but the research does not establish a model or configuration that can run every OBS scene or resolution. Do not treat it as a universal OBS replacement.

FAQ
How much does a 24/7 stream really cost?
There is no single total that applies to every stream. Add the hardware or compute, power or service, transfer, storage, and the time needed for setup and ongoing operations for your particular output. Compare plans against the same source, platform, quality, and features.
Can I run OBS on a VPS?
A VPS can host an OBS environment if its configuration meets your encoding and workflow requirements. You still need to set up and operate the software, connection, storage, and recovery process unless those services are included in a managed offering.
Is managed streaming cheaper than leaving a PC on?
It depends on the PC’s incremental power use, your internet and hardware situation, the managed plan’s limits and features, and how much operating time you value. Compare total costs for equivalent stream quality and workload; the research does not provide an independent, like-for-like market-wide total.
Will moving OBS to a VPS fix dropped frames?
Not necessarily. The OBS Project’s troubleshooting guidance points to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Test the ingest server and bitrate against stable upload capacity; moving the encoder does not by itself correct a poorly configured or unreliable stream path.
