Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS 3.0) exposed two main ways to work with SharePoint programmatically: a server-side object model for code running on the SharePoint server, and web services for applications that connected remotely. The distinction mattered because the application’s location and connection needs shaped which interface to use. WSS 3.0 is a legacy platform: Microsoft ended its extended support on October 11, 2017, so this is historical API guidance for understanding or maintaining existing systems, not a recommendation for new development.

What the WSS 3.0 API covered

WSS 3.0 was more than a web interface for documents and lists. Its programming surface let developers work with sites, subsites, lists, and documents; build management applications; respond to system and user events; and create components such as Web Parts. The platform exposed this functionality through its server-side object model and a web-services layer. The historical chapter introducing these APIs also discusses event handling and the choice between the two interfaces. Microsoft’s WSS 3.0 developer resource-center download describes a collection of SDK documentation, code samples, videos, blogs, and other developer material.

Object model or web services?

The two surfaces differed principally in where code ran and how it reached SharePoint. The available chapter extract does not establish a complete operation-by-operation comparison, so specific capabilities should be checked in the version’s SDK rather than assumed to match across interfaces.

Factor Server-side object model Web services
Execution location Code runs locally on the SharePoint server. Client code invokes SharePoint functionality remotely.
Access context Directly suited to code running within the SharePoint server environment. Intended for applications outside the immediate SharePoint process.
Application fit Useful when building server-side extensions or applications with broad access to platform functionality. Useful when a separate client application needs to communicate with SharePoint.
Coverage The chapter characterizes this as broad, but does not provide an operation-level matrix. Exact parity with the object model is not established; consult the WSS 3.0 SDK.

As a practical decision, start with where the application runs: code hosted on the SharePoint server points toward the object model, while a client outside that process points toward the web-services layer. For a particular operation, confirm the relevant API reference instead of inferring that both surfaces offer the same methods.

Key namespaces and their roles

The period API references group functionality into namespaces. The following are the principal areas identified in the WSS 3.0 chapter extract:

Namespace Role described for WSS 3.0
Microsoft.SharePoint Core work with a top-level site, subsites, and lists.
Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration Types and members for managing a WSS deployment.
Microsoft.SharePoint.Deployment Importing and exporting content between WSS sites.
Microsoft.SharePoint.Meetings Customizing Meeting Workspaces.
Microsoft.SharePoint.MobileControls Mobile list controls.

These descriptions are useful for orienting yourself in old code or documentation, but they are not a substitute for checking the exact types and members available in the installed WSS 3.0 version and service-pack level. The digitized chapter extract includes aggregate counts of namespaces, assemblies, and web services, but those counts are not treated here as authoritative.

Where developers looked for documentation

The WSS 3.0 Software Development Kit (SDK) was the period’s central API documentation and sample-code reference. The archived WSS 3.0 SDK listing says its coverage included the search query object model and Query Web service, administrative object-model documentation, and API references in migration and deployment areas. The page is an archive listing; it does not guarantee that downloads, links, or their dependencies remain available today.

Microsoft’s WSS 3.0 Developer Resource Centers material gathered links to documentation and samples along with other developer resources. Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 belong to the same historical 2007-era .NET and ASP.NET toolchain. They provide context for the original platform, not a modern supported development recommendation.
