An auto-role switch marked ON does not prove that a Discord bot can assign the role in a particular server. Discord requires the bot to have the relevant role-management permission, and the target role must sit below the bot’s highest role. The title’s figures—127 servers and 2 working—are not independently verified, and the bot and measurement method are unidentified, so the cause of the reported gap cannot be established.
What does an auto-role setting marked ON mean?
It tells you that the setting is enabled in the bot’s interface. It does not establish that Discord will accept a role assignment in every server. The toggle and Discord’s server-side permission and role-position checks are separate conditions.
The claim that the setting was ON in 127 servers and worked in 2 appears only in the headline. No bot, measurement period, definition of “worked,” or counting method is identified, so those figures should not be treated as a verified statistic.
What Discord requires before a bot can assign a role
The bot needs Manage Roles
Discord identifies Manage Roles as the permission used to manage roles. Its role-management rules limit that permission to roles below the role of the user or bot doing the management. See Discord’s Roles and Permissions guide and its developer permissions documentation.

The target role must be below the bot’s highest role
Discord’s developer documentation states: “A bot can grant roles to other users that are of a lower position than its own highest role.” Compare the target auto-role with the bot’s highest role in that server. If the target is at or above the bot’s highest role, the bot cannot grant it, even if the auto-role feature is switched on. See Discord’s role hierarchy documentation.
Manage Roles and hierarchy are related checks, not alternatives: verify the permission and the target role’s position. Discord’s server-management documentation also lists MANAGE_ROLES for managing roles below the bot’s highest role: Server and Channel Management.

How to troubleshoot an auto-role that does not work
- Check the bot’s permission in the affected server. Confirm that it currently has Manage Roles. Permissions can differ between servers, so check each one rather than relying on a dashboard-wide ON indicator.
- Compare role positions. In the server’s role list, verify that the target role is below the bot’s highest role. Move the target below the bot if you want the bot to be able to assign it, subject to the server’s configuration and permissions.
- Check whether the expected trigger occurred. Confirm what event is supposed to assign the role and whether that event happened. The trigger and its behavior depend on the specific bot; the bot is not identified here.
- Inspect the bot’s response or logs. If the permission and hierarchy checks look right, use the bot’s own status messages or logs to narrow down the failure. What evidence is available depends on the product.
Why the reported 125 failures cannot be attributed to role hierarchy
Discord’s documented rules make permissions and role position sensible first checks, but the headline provides no server-by-server permission snapshots, role configurations, trigger details, bot logs, or bot-specific documentation. It therefore does not show that hierarchy caused the reported failures—or establish that there were exactly 125 failures under a consistent test.

Do not grant Administrator simply to test auto-role. Discord describes it as a powerful permission that bypasses channel restrictions; the narrower Manage Roles permission is the relevant starting point for role assignment. See Discord’s permissions FAQ.
