No, Discord does not say every user must submit a face scan or ID to keep using the app. Its age system combines account-level age inference with age-assurance checks for some users and restricted features. Discord says its facial age-estimation video is processed on the device, while its ID-and-selfie route sends material to verification providers. Those are company descriptions, not independently audited findings.
Does Discord require a face scan or ID to keep using the app?
Discord describes two distinct processes. First, it can infer an account’s likely age group from account metadata and aggregated activity signals. Second, a user may be asked to confirm age to access restricted content, spaces, or settings if the account remains unclassified or needs additional assurance. The methods offered and whether a check is required can vary by user and region.
Discord’s September 2026 explanation says its inference model uses information such as account tenure, subscription history, email or phone verification status, active days, servers owned, and message counts. Discord says it does not inspect message text or use uploaded media, usernames, profile bios, facial scans, government ID data, or protected demographic attributes for this model. It also says age-group labels from users who had already confirmed age were used as training and evaluation labels, but verification material itself was not given to Discord or used to train the model. Discord’s explanation of age inference
The model can classify an account as adult or teen when its confidence thresholds are met. Accounts it cannot classify receive additional protections and may be asked to confirm age for access to restricted areas or settings. This account-level inference is separate from submitting a selfie or identity document.

Does Discord’s facial age scan leave your phone?
Discord says facial age estimation analyzes a brief video selfie entirely on the user’s device and sends only an estimated age to Discord. That differs from an ID-document check: Discord’s described route sends an ID image through k-ID to document-verification partner Veratad, where a selfie is matched to the ID photo. Discord says it receives only the age result and that verification material is deleted after verification. These data-handling and deletion statements come from Discord; the cited sources do not independently confirm each vendor’s implementation.
How the methods differ
| Method Discord describes | What is processed or shared | What Discord says it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Facial age estimation | A brief video selfie analyzed on the device. | An estimated age; Discord says the video does not leave the device. Discord’s methods and data description |
| ID document plus selfie | An ID image goes through k-ID to Veratad; the selfie is matched to the ID photo. | An age result. Discord says the verification material is deleted after verification. Discord’s methods and data description |
| Credit-card check | Stripe handles the check and may retain a financial record and the card’s last four digits. | An age signal. Discord’s methods and data description |
| AgeKey | A passkey-style credential is stored on the user’s device. | A pass/fail age assertion. Discord’s methods and data description |
| Google Wallet or Apple App Store age range | The age range is shared, rather than the underlying ID, according to Discord. | An age-range signal. Discord’s methods and data description |
These methods do not all provide the same kind of proof: facial estimation is an estimate, an ID route checks a document and selfie, and an AgeKey supplies a reusable pass/fail assertion. Their privacy implications depend on what each one collects, where processing occurs, what a provider retains, and how a failed or declined check affects access. The available sources do not establish that one option is universally safest.

What happens if a check fails or is inconclusive?
Discord’s support documentation says facial estimation may not be sufficient in some cases, and a user may need to confirm age with more than one method. It describes retry and appeal routes, with manual review available in limited cases. A failed estimate should therefore not be treated as a definitive finding about a person’s actual age. The support page gives current instructions and eligibility details, which can change by region and rollout. Discord’s age-assurance support instructions

Why are people worried about Discord age verification?
Face scans and government IDs are sensitive information, and using outside providers raises questions about collection, retention, deletion, and account linkage. Users may also be concerned about the scope of automated age inference and the consequences of being misclassified, including losing access to content or settings. Discord says its on-device facial estimation gives it an age estimate rather than the face scan, and says its ID flow returns an age signal rather than the underlying identity documents. Those assurances are not an independent audit of current vendors.

The backlash was sharpened by an earlier incident involving a third-party provider, separate from the providers Discord currently names for its described methods. The Associated Press reported in February 2026 that government ID photos belonging to up to 70,000 Discord users were exposed in that incident, and that Discord said it no longer worked with that vendor. The report does not establish that all affected people experienced identity theft or misuse. Associated Press reporting on the rollout delay and earlier incident
Discord’s chief technology officer and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy acknowledged the distrust in a statement reported by AP: “Many of you are worried that this is just another big tech company finding new ways to collect your personal data. That we’re creating a problem to justify invasive solutions,” he wrote. “I get that skepticism. It’s earned, not just toward us, but toward the entire tech industry. But that’s not what we’re doing.”

Which age-assurance options are available now?
Availability is not universal. Discord’s support article described limited testing during June and July 2026 of Google Wallet, credit-card checks, and an Incode selfie and ID flow; it said broader global expansion was delayed until the second half of 2026. In that historical test, Discord said Incode’s selfie age estimation had to keep biometric processing on-device. These test details do not show that each method is now available to every account or in every country. Check Discord’s live support instructions for options shown to your account.

What do UK age-assurance rules mean for Discord users?
In the UK, age-assurance duties apply to regulated services in scope and certain content harmful to children; there is no general requirement for UK residents to complete an age check merely to access legal internet content. Ofcom’s October 2025 response says it does not certify individual age-assurance providers and does not receive the personal data people submit to them. This is UK-specific context, not a statement of the law in other countries. Ofcom’s October 2025 response on age verification and access rights
The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s March 2026 study focused on data-access issues for facial age-estimation tools. It notes that Ofcom’s considerations include effectiveness, lack of bias, ease of use, interoperability, and privacy; it does not evaluate Discord’s implementation. No independent performance statistic for Discord’s current estimator is established by the cited sources, so its accuracy should not be assumed from general claims about facial age estimation.
