Some promotional USB Webkeys can be opened and have their stored website data changed, but that does not mean their controller firmware can be reprogrammed. In the older devices documented publicly, a separate EEPROM held launch data and investigators accessed it with an I2C interface. The process is board-specific, and an unknown Webkey may act as a keyboard that sends keystrokes to your computer.

What a Webkey is—and what “reprogramming” can mean

Here, Webkey means a promotional USB device designed to enter keystrokes that open a website. It may identify itself to the computer as a keyboard rather than appear as a USB storage drive. “Webkey” is also used for unrelated software and services, so the hardware meaning matters.

There are two different targets people may mean by reprogramming:

  • Changing stored launch data: modifying information in a separate EEPROM, such as the URL a particular device enters.
  • Changing controller firmware: replacing the program that controls the device’s USB behavior. The reports below do not demonstrate this.

Evidence from a few older devices cannot establish how every product sold as a Webkey is built. Treat the specific board and components in front of you—not the product label—as the authority.

What investigators changed in documented Webkeys

A Webkey with an epoxy-covered controller

In an October 2, 2012 report, Hackaday described Brad Antoniewicz opening a Webkey and finding a small board with a processor covered by a black epoxy blob and a separate EEPROM. The report says he used a Bus Pirate to communicate with the EEPROM over I2C and overwrite its contents. The exact EEPROM datasheet was not identified; the article’s suggestion that nearby pads might allow access to the controller was speculative, not a demonstrated firmware-reprogramming method. Read the Hackaday account.

A separate promotional dongle with a button

A February 28, 2012 Hackaday report concerns a different device. Pressing its button reportedly sent a keyboard sequence that opened the Windows Run prompt, entered a URL, and launched Internet Explorer. Its author says the controller was epoxy-covered and the EEPROM was not write-protected; a Bus Pirate was used to replace the URL data. Those observations apply to that dongle, not to all Webkeys. An American Express-branded Webkey and an untested programmer proposal

A May 26, 2015 account identifies a J24C02C marking on one American Express-branded Webkey EEPROM and discusses using a CH341A programmer with a 24C02 read command. The author says the device was damaged and the proposed procedure could not be tested. It is therefore a possible route described for one marked component—not a verified tutorial or a recommendation for an unidentified board. Read the account.

EEPROM data changes are not firmware reprogramming

An EEPROM can hold data used by a device, while a separate microcontroller governs how the device behaves over USB. Replacing a URL in EEPROM, as described in the 2012 reports, does not by itself replace the controller’s firmware or turn the device into a general-purpose programmable keyboard emulator.

The first Hackaday account did not identify the EEPROM’s exact datasheet and only speculated that pads might provide a route to the controller. The 2015 CH341A proposal was not tested. The available accounts therefore support only the narrower conclusion that some specific devices’ stored launch data was accessed or overwritten; they do not establish a general way to reflash Webkey controllers.

How to assess a device before attempting a change

There is no universal Webkey pinout or confirmed tool choice. Before connecting a programmer or probing a board, establish what the target part is and whether the interface matches it.

  1. Confirm the device and your authority. Work only on a Webkey you own or are authorized to analyze. Do not plug an unknown keyboard-emulating device into a computer you care about.
  2. Inspect the actual board and component markings. Identify the EEPROM, controller, visible pads, and board revision. An epoxy-covered controller may not be directly accessible. Do not assume that a J24C02C or any other part is present just because it appeared in another device.
  3. Verify the target’s requirements. Consult the identified component’s documentation for its interface, pinout, voltage, and storage characteristics. Do not attach a programmer based on a guessed pinout or an assumed 24C02-compatible part.
  4. Choose a tool only after identification. A Bus Pirate was used for I2C EEPROM work in the two 2012 reports. A CH341A was proposed for one marked EEPROM in 2015, but that procedure was not tested. Neither report establishes compatibility with another board.
  5. Keep the goal narrow. If your goal is to change the URL, that is a stored-data question. If your goal is to change USB behavior or turn the device into another platform, that is a controller-firmware question for which these reports provide no verified method.

Opening, probing, or electrically connecting to a board can damage the device if the target, pins, or voltage are misunderstood. The historical reports do not provide a universal wiring guide, so do not infer one from their results.

Security and device-specific limits

A device that presents as a keyboard can send input to its host. A Stack Exchange answer on Webkeys explains that EEPROM access involves physical work rather than simply plugging the unit in and treating it as a storage drive; it also notes the security relevance of keyboard-emulated input. Not every related device is rewritable. A government report search excerpt describes an encrypted eBridge Arc that cannot be wiped or reprogrammed; that is a warning against assuming all devices share the construction or access demonstrated by the older Webkey projects. View the government report.

Those examples date from 2012–2015, and they do not establish the construction or protections of current Webkeys. In a 2024 hardware-hacking discussion, a reader asked about changing a website or adapting a device for another purpose, but replies were exploratory rather than evidence of a successful conversion.
