Microsoft Edge can remember an instruction to launch a downloaded file as soon as the download finishes. The control is called Always open files of this type, and it applies to the file extension—not just the file you selected.
For example, clearing the setting for one .zip download stops Edge from automatically opening subsequent ZIP files too. It does not change which application Windows or macOS uses for ZIP files.
Clear the auto-open rule from Edge Downloads
The quickest method is to use Edge’s download history.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Press Ctrl + J, or enter
edge://downloadsin the address bar. - Find a downloaded file with the extension that is opening automatically. For example, find a
.pdf,.zip, or.exefile. - Open that download’s three-dot menu.
- Clear Always open files of this type.
Edge will no longer automatically launch future downloads with that extension. The change is extension-wide, so you do not need to repeat it for every filename.

Use Edge’s Downloads settings page
If the option is not visible beside a recent download, open the settings page directly:
- Enter
edge://settings/downloadsin the address bar and press Enter. - Review the download-related controls and remove the remembered auto-open preference for the affected file type when Edge presents it.
Depending on the Edge version and the file type, the practical way to expose the setting may still be the three-dot menu for a matching item in edge://downloads.
Do not confuse auto-open with download prompts
Edge has a separate setting named Ask me what to do with each download. You can find it under Settings > Downloads.
That option asks what to do before each download action completes. It does not remove an existing Always open files of this type rule. If a file extension is already launching automatically, clear the extension-specific rule first.
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Always open files of this type | Automatically launches future downloads matching a particular extension. |
| Ask me what to do with each download | Prompts you about each download; it does not erase an existing auto-open rule. |
| Default application | Chooses which installed program opens the file when you open it; it does not control Edge’s remembered download behavior. |
PDFs may be opening in Edge for a different reason
PDFs have two separate behaviors that can look like auto-opening:
Rank #2
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Edge may be rendering the PDF in its built-in PDF viewer as part of the web page or download flow.
- Edge may be downloading the PDF and launching it through an auto-open rule.
Clearing Always open files of this type addresses the second case. It does not prevent Edge from displaying PDFs in its internal viewer.
On Windows and macOS, administrators can use the Edge policy Always open PDF files externally, also called AlwaysOpenPdfExternally, to disable Edge’s internal PDF viewer and treat PDFs as downloads. This policy does not necessarily make PDFs open in another application: if Edge remains the default PDF reader, the downloaded file can still open in Edge.
For managed Windows devices, the policy registry value is:
SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeAlwaysOpenPdfExternally
Set it as a REG_DWORD with the value 0x00000001. The policy is supported in Edge 77 and later on Windows and macOS, but not on Android or iOS.
What to do when the checkbox is unavailable
Edge does not expose the auto-open checkbox for every file type. Some extensions require an explicit user gesture for security reasons. Remote Desktop Protocol files are a notable example: after the behavior change in stable Edge 108, automatic opening of downloaded .rdp files was no longer available through the normal interface.
Rank #3
- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
If Always open files of this type is gray or missing, that may be an intentional restriction rather than a damaged setting. Check whether:
- The file type is considered risky or requires a user gesture.
- SmartScreen has blocked or warned about the file.
- The browser is managed by an organization.
Managed devices: check Edge policies
An administrator can configure automatic opening with the List of file types that should be automatically opened on download policy, whose policy name is AutoOpenFileTypes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn Group Policy, the path is:
Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge
The extension is entered without the period. Use txt, not .txt. On Windows, a registry-based configuration uses entries such as:
SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeAutoOpenFileTypes1
The value is a REG_SZ containing the extension, for example rdp or txt. Additional extensions use sequential entries such as 2 and 3.
This policy supports Edge 85 and later on Windows and macOS. On Windows, it is intended for devices joined to Active Directory, joined to Microsoft Entra ID, or enrolled for device management. It is not supported on Android or iOS.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
SmartScreen checks still apply. A policy that permits an extension to auto-open does not force Edge to launch a file that Defender SmartScreen rejects.
Recommended Free Tools
Check whether an organization controls the setting
- Enter
edge://policyin the address bar. - Look for policies such as
AutoOpenFileTypes,AlwaysOpenPdfExternally, or download-security policies. - If a policy is listed, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing Edge’s local download history.
The DownloadRestrictions policy is separate. It controls whether Edge blocks dangerous, potentially dangerous, malicious, or all downloads. It does not clear an extension’s auto-open preference.
If Edge still opens the file
- Clear the rule for the correct extension. A rule for
.zipdoes not affect.7z, and a rule for.pdfdoes not affect.docx. - Test a new download. The change affects future matching downloads; it does not undo an application that is already open.
- Check the PDF viewer distinction. A PDF displayed inside Edge may not be using the download auto-open rule.
- Check the default application. If the downloaded file opens after you manually select it, change the Windows or macOS default app separately.
- Check
edge://policy. A company policy may be restoring the behavior or hiding the checkbox. - Consider SmartScreen. Security warnings and blocks can override automatic opening, even when the extension is configured to launch.
FAQ
Does clearing auto-open stop Edge from downloading the file?
No. It stops Edge from automatically launching the file after download. The download itself can still complete normally unless another setting or security policy blocks it.
Does the setting apply only to the file I selected?
No. Always open files of this type applies to the extension. Clearing it for one ZIP, PDF, EXE, or other matching file changes the behavior for later downloads with that extension.
Will enabling Ask me what to do with each download fix auto-open?
No. Ask me what to do with each download is a separate prompt setting. Clear Always open files of this type from the matching download’s three-dot menu.

Why does a PDF still open in Edge after I clear the rule?
Edge may be displaying the PDF in its built-in viewer, or Edge may still be the default PDF application. The download auto-open rule and PDF viewer/default-app behavior are separate.
Why is Always open files of this type gray or missing?
Some file types require a user gesture and cannot be configured for automatic opening through the normal Edge interface. Organization policies or security controls can also restrict the option.
Does changing the default app remove Edge’s auto-open setting?
No. Default-app associations and Edge’s extension-specific download preference are independent. Change or clear each one separately.
The Bottom Line
To disable Edge’s automatic launching, open edge://downloads with Ctrl + J, locate a file with the affected extension, open its three-dot menu, and clear Always open files of this type. Do not rely on Ask me what to do with each download; it does not remove the existing rule. If the option is unavailable, investigate PDF viewer behavior, restricted file types, SmartScreen, and managed Edge policies.
