To stop accidental typing on a laptop’s built-in keyboard while using an external one, a utility must identify the internal device separately and disable only that device. In a September 16, 2026 DEV Community account, Mika Flowers describes building KeyFlip for GNOME/Linux around that idea: detect keyboards as devices, react to hotplug events, and restore the internal keyboard when the external one is removed. The implementation and safety behavior below are Flowers’s account, not an independent hardware audit.
Why disabling one keyboard is different from disabling “the keyboard”
Linux can expose multiple input devices to the desktop. A laptop’s built-in keyboard and a USB keyboard are not necessarily treated as one indivisible input source. That distinction makes a targeted solution possible: identify the internal device, then alter how the system handles that device without disrupting the external keyboard.
Flowers describes KeyFlip as a response to accidental key presses on the built-in keyboard while working on an external keyboard. The goal is not to disable all keyboard input, but to avoid input from one specific device while another remains available.
How KeyFlip identifies and tracks devices
Match metadata, not just a display name
Linux exposes input devices through paths such as /dev/input/event*, with associated metadata including bus type, physical path, vendor and product identifiers, and device name. Flowers says KeyFlip identifies the internal keyboard using bus type and physical path rather than relying on its name alone. Names such as “AT Translated Set 2 keyboard” can vary, so a name-only match may be less dependable.

React to device additions and removals
For hotplug changes, Flowers says KeyFlip subscribes to udev device-add and device-remove events rather than repeatedly polling for keyboards. The author’s rationale is that event notifications allow prompt reaction without idle polling. That is an account of KeyFlip’s implementation, not a guarantee of response time on every system or device.
Why a keyboard-disabling utility needs safeguards
Disabling an input device can leave someone without a usable keyboard if the wrong device is selected or the external one disappears. Flowers describes four safeguards in KeyFlip’s design:
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Avoid action when detection is ambiguous: the utility should not disable the internal keyboard if it cannot confidently identify the device.
- Re-enable on external-keyboard removal: removing the external keyboard should restore the built-in one.
- Allow manual override: a tray control provides a way to change the automatic behavior.
- Fail open if the utility stops: the internal keyboard should be enabled if KeyFlip or its daemon stops.
These are the author’s described design choices; the available account does not establish that they have been independently audited or tested across hardware.

| Approach | Layer and scope | Compatibility and recovery considerations |
|---|---|---|
xinput |
X server control; can target an identified device in that context. | Baeldung presents it as an X server method. Do not assume it is a universal control for Wayland sessions. |
LIBINPUT_IGNORE_DEVICE |
libinput initialization; tells libinput to ignore the selected device. | The libinput documentation says other parts of the stack, if present, may still treat the device normally. “Ignored by libinput” does not mean disabled at every system layer. |
Kernel boot options such as i8042.nokbd |
Kernel/driver startup behavior; the option discussed by Baeldung concerns the i8042 keyboard path rather than a general per-device desktop toggle. | A lower-level or boot-time change can have broader effects and may require a recovery route outside the normal desktop session. |
The table reflects the scope described in the cited documentation and overview, not a recommendation that any one method will work on every laptop. Before choosing, establish whether the active session is X11 or Wayland, whether the change should last only for a session or persist, whether it targets one device or a wider driver class, and how keyboard input can be restored if the match is wrong.
What the documentation says about libinput’s ignore property
The libinput 1.11.1 documentation describes LIBINPUT_IGNORE_DEVICE as a static device configuration property. When it is set to anything other than 0, libinput does not initialize that device. The same documentation cautions that other components of the input stack, if present, may continue to treat it normally. The property therefore defines libinput’s handling, not a system-wide removal of the keyboard.

- Which session is active? An X server tool such as
xinputshould not be presented as a universal Wayland solution. - How persistent should the change be? A session-level adjustment and a boot-time option have different lifetimes and recovery paths.
- How narrowly can the device be identified? A per-device match is different from a driver or device-class change; a display name alone may not be stable enough.
- How will input be restored? Keep a working external keyboard, a manual override, or another practical recovery route before disabling the built-in device.
Baeldung’s overview covers several control layers, including X server methods and kernel options, but it is not GNOME-specific guidance for every current session. Its tutorial states that its code was tested on Debian 12 and GNU Bash 5.1.4; those conditions should not be generalized to other distributions or environments.

What KeyFlip’s build story illustrates
KeyFlip’s design centers on a general Linux input-device lesson: reliable automation depends on distinguishing the intended device, observing changes as they happen, and planning for recovery before disabling input. Flowers’s account illustrates one GNOME utility’s approach using bus and physical-path metadata, udev add/remove events, and fail-open safeguards. It does not establish a single best method for every laptop, desktop session, or keyboard.
