A DigitalOcean Droplet starts at $4 per month on the Basic plan, according to DigitalOcean’s pricing page. That starting price covers the server itself. Backups, snapshots and Kubernetes are billed separately, so the monthly total depends on which of those you add.

This guide covers published pricing, billing rules and listed specifications for Droplets and DigitalOcean Kubernetes. It does not include performance benchmarks, reliability measurements or support testing, so treat it as a pricing and fit assessment rather than a hands-on verdict on the service’s day-to-day performance.

How much does a DigitalOcean Droplet cost?

DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing page lists the two entry Basic plans below. Specifications are DigitalOcean’s listed values, not measured results.

Plan Monthly price Memory vCPU SSD storage Transfer
Basic (entry plan) $4 512 MiB 1 10 GiB 500 GiB
Basic (next listed plan) $6 1 GiB 1 25 GiB 1,000 GiB

The step from $4 to $6 doubles memory, adds 15 GiB of SSD storage and doubles the transfer allowance. Both plans list one vCPU, so the extra $2 buys memory, storage and bandwidth rather than processing capacity. The pricing page’s full tier list is the place to check larger plans, as this guide focuses on the entry tiers.

How am I billed for Droplets?

  • Per-second billing: DigitalOcean states that per-second billing began on January 1, 2026.
  • Minimum charge: the listed minimum is 60 seconds or $0.01.
  • Bundled plans: these carry a monthly cap, which is the mechanism behind DigitalOcean’s wording: “Manage your budget with our monthly caps or usage-based pricing options.”
  • v5 Droplets: these are billed on actual hours and are not capped at 672 hours, according to the same pricing source.

Per-second billing matters most for short-lived workloads such as test environments that you create and destroy often. For a server that runs all month, the capped bundled price is the easier figure to forecast.

Backups and snapshots add a second line item

Backups are priced separately from the Droplet. The percentage-based options are calculated from the Droplet’s own monthly cost. The usage-based and snapshot options are calculated from stored data. The table applies DigitalOcean’s listed percentages to the two Basic plans above; these are simple multiplications of listed values, not quoted bills.

Kubernetes pricing is per node, not per cluster

DigitalOcean Kubernetes separates the control plane from the worker nodes you pay for:

  • Worker nodes: Basic worker nodes start at $12/month per node.
  • Control plane: free.
  • Control-plane high availability: optional, at $40/month.
  • Other resources: storage and load balancers are priced separately.

For a three-node Basic cluster at the listed starting price, the worker nodes come to $36/month before storage and load balancers. Adding the optional control-plane high availability brings the listed compute total to $76/month. Your real figure will be higher once storage and load balancers are included.

Unmanaged means the server administration is yours

DigitalOcean describes Droplets as unmanaged, so the company does not take on day-to-day server administration. The source confirms that status but does not publish a complete security or operations checklist. In practice, an unmanaged Droplet leaves these tasks with you:

  • Installing, configuring and updating the applications that run on the server.
  • Security configuration, including firewall rules. DigitalOcean’s product page describes Cloud Firewalls as an available feature.
  • Monitoring and backup setup. The product page describes monitoring tools, and the backup options above are separate purchases you configure yourself.

If you do not have someone to handle those tasks, a $4 server is not the cheap option. The lowest bill can be outweighed by hours of administration.

How to estimate your monthly cost

  1. Choose a Droplet plan and note its monthly price, for example $4 or $6.
  2. Add the backup percentage you need: 20% for weekly or 30% for daily backups, calculated from the plan price.
  3. Add snapshot or usage-based backup charges based on the GB or GiB you will store.
  4. Check the included transfer against your expected traffic. The listed allowance is 500 GiB on the $4 plan and 1,000 GiB on the $6 plan.
  5. For Kubernetes, multiply the number of worker nodes by $12 and add $40 if you want control-plane high availability.
  6. Add storage and load balancer charges for the Kubernetes cluster, which are separate from the figures above.
  7. Decide between a bundled plan with a monthly cap and usage-based billing for workloads that run only part of the month.

Who the platform fits

Droplets suit developers and small teams that will administer a Linux server themselves and want a low, predictable entry cost. The $4 and $6 plans are easy to budget, and the per-second billing rules help when a server runs only some of the time. Teams that want the operating system and application managed for them, or that need the services outside this guide, should look at the other options before committing.
