A 24/7 YouTube stream on a DigitalOcean Droplet can cost more in outbound bandwidth than the Droplet itself. DigitalOcean lists Basic Droplets starting at $4 per month with 500 GiB of included transfer; above the plan’s allowance, outbound transfer is $0.01 per GiB. At a constant 6 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 1,810 GiB, which would mean roughly $13.10 in transfer overage if the Droplet had 500 GiB available and no other team usage. That is an estimate, not a bill quote: the actual total depends on the selected plan, pooled team allowance, stream bitrate, billing period, taxes, and account configuration.
How much does a 24/7 streaming Droplet cost?
Budget for two components: the Droplet’s monthly price and any outbound transfer above its included allowance. DigitalOcean lists Basic Droplets from $4 per month, with 500 GiB transfer on the entry plan. Higher Basic tiers and CPU-Optimized Droplets have different compute and transfer allocations; DigitalOcean identifies media streaming among workloads that may suit CPU-Optimized Droplets. DigitalOcean’s Droplet billing is per second with a 60-second minimum, a policy it says began January 1, 2026. Basic bundled plans have a monthly cap. Since a 24/7 stream runs continuously, use the displayed monthly plan price for budgeting rather than treating it like a short-lived server job. Additional outbound transfer is $0.01/GiB; inbound transfer is free. Allowance and usage are pooled across the DigitalOcean team, do not roll over, and count public-interface traffic. The stream’s outbound contribution to YouTube ingest is what the calculations below estimate. They do not count viewers’ playback traffic as Droplet egress: YouTube receives the encoder feed and handles delivery to viewers.

Estimate bandwidth from your bitrate
For a constant bitrate, estimate monthly transfer as bitrate in bits per second × seconds in the billing period ÷ 8, then convert bytes to GiB. A 30-day month has 2,592,000 seconds. The following figures are arithmetic estimates, not DigitalOcean-published usage statistics; they exclude protocol overhead and changes in actual bitrate.

The overage column assumes a 30-day month, constant bitrate, exactly 500 GiB of available team allowance, no other team transfer, and no taxes. It is the overage only; add the Droplet price. The 500 GiB assumption applies to the entry Basic plan described on the pricing page, not to every Droplet. Apply your selected plan’s and team’s actual allowance once, then multiply any excess GiB by $0.01.

Choose a bitrate and estimate the right plan
YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives different recommended bitrates by codec and frame rate. For H.264, it recommends 8 Mbps for 720p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding examples are 6, 10, and 12 Mbps. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1. Confirm current codec support and settings in YouTube Studio’s live control room; recommendations can change. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
As a planning example, the H.264 recommendation for 1080p30 is 14 Mbps. At a steady rate, that is approximately 4,225 GiB over 30 days, or about $37.25 above a 500 GiB allowance, before the Droplet price and any applicable taxes. The actual stream may use more or less transfer if its bitrate fluctuates or protocol overhead adds traffic.

- Choose compute based on the encoder’s actual workload, not resolution alone. DigitalOcean lists CPU-Optimized Droplets as suitable for workloads including media streaming, but select a plan only after validating that it can encode your chosen settings reliably.
- Compare each candidate plan’s monthly compute price, CPU allocation, and included transfer on the pricing page. Estimate egress at your intended bitrate, then subtract the team’s available pooled allowance.
- DigitalOcean lists Bangalore as a data-center location. That confirms an India location option, not that it will be the best or most reliable route to every YouTube ingest endpoint. Test the selected region and ingest path.
Set up the stream and protect the key
- Configure the encoder. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no farther apart than four seconds. Match the bitrate to YouTube’s current guidance for your codec and video format.
- Allow network headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips advise leaving 20% upload-bandwidth room. Allow additional capacity for network overhead and validate stream health instead of assuming the target video bitrate is the complete network load. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Connect YouTube ingest. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, retrieve the stream key and enter it in your encoder’s stream settings. Follow YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance for the current setup flow.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password. Anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream; rotate it if it is exposed or compromised.
- Test before relying on the broadcast. Verify stream health and playback in the control room, and check actual outbound usage against your expected bitrate. A test also helps reveal whether the chosen region and ingest endpoint work well together.
What can change the estimate?
- Plan and pooled usage: Included transfer depends on the Droplet plan and is pooled at team level. Other public-interface traffic can use part of the allowance.
- Bitrate variation and overhead: The table assumes a constant bitrate and excludes protocol overhead. Actual transfer can differ.
- Billing period and taxes: The example uses 30 days and excludes taxes. Your actual bill depends on the billing period and account billing configuration.
- Region and ingest path: A listed Bangalore location does not establish latency or reliability for your specific YouTube ingest path; test it.

The bill is higher than the Droplet price
Check public-interface transfer for the whole team, not only this Droplet. The allowance is pooled and the $0.01/GiB charge applies to excess outbound transfer. Compare measured usage with the planned bitrate and billing period; the estimate can be low if the stream bitrate varies or overhead is material.

The video drops or stream health is poor
Check the encoder’s output bitrate, available network headroom, keyframe interval, and stream-health status in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the stream key and ingest settings are correct. If the path from the selected Droplet region is unstable, test another available route rather than assuming Bangalore is automatically optimal.
The server cannot sustain the chosen encoding workload
Review CPU use and stream stability at the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec. Compare the workload with the compute allocation of the selected plan; consider a plan with more suitable CPU resources if the encoder cannot hold its settings.
