For a continuous FFmpeg encode, a DigitalOcean CPU-Optimized Droplet is the more predictable starting point: it provides dedicated CPU access, and DigitalOcean identifies video and live streaming as suitable workloads. A Basic Droplet costs less and may be reasonable for light or intermittent streams, but its shared CPU can vary with activity on the host.
Neither plan guarantees a particular resolution or frame rate. Choose the same vCPU and memory tier for a fair comparison, run your actual FFmpeg command with representative content, and monitor CPU use and YouTube stream health before relying on it.
What differs between Basic and CPU-Optimized Droplets?
The central difference is how CPU resources are allocated. DigitalOcean Basic Droplets use shared CPU: a hyper-thread may be shared with other Droplets, and the CPU cycles available to a workload can depend on what else is running on the host. CPU-Optimized Droplets provide dedicated vCPUs with guaranteed access to the full hyper-thread. DigitalOcean describes CPU-Optimized Droplets as intended for CPU-bound tasks, including video and live streaming. That is workload guidance, not a published FFmpeg benchmark. DigitalOcean’s Droplet plan guide explains the plan distinctions.
Why sustained encoding favors dedicated CPU
When FFmpeg encodes continuously, it may use substantial CPU resources for the duration of the stream. Dedicated CPU makes that access more predictable than shared CPU. If the stream is intermittent, uses a light encoding workload, or can tolerate variation, Basic may be a cost-conscious trial. Actual demand depends on the codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, filters, and input material.

Plan comparison and example cost
The following are equal-size examples from DigitalOcean’s pricing page, checked in 2026. Plan prices and catalogs can change, so confirm the live listing before choosing a Droplet.
| Comparison | Basic Droplet | CPU-Optimized Droplet |
|---|---|---|
| CPU access | Shared; performance may vary with other host workloads. | Dedicated vCPUs with guaranteed access to the full hyper-thread. |
| Example configuration | 2 vCPU / 4 GiB | 2 vCPU / 4 GiB |
| Example price | $24/month | $42/month |
| Included transfer for the example | 4,000 GiB | 4,000 GiB |
| Fit for FFmpeg YouTube streaming | Lower-cost option when CPU variability is acceptable. | More predictable starting point for sustained, CPU-bound encoding; DigitalOcean lists video and live streaming as target workloads. |
These prices and transfer allowances are the figures listed for the specified configurations on DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing page; they are not a promise of a particular stream’s performance. DigitalOcean also lists Premium variants with higher outbound speeds for CPU-Optimized plans, but throughput depends on the specific plan and variant. Check the current listing rather than assuming a general speed guarantee.

How YouTube’s ingest settings affect the choice
Your chosen output settings affect both the compute needed to encode and the bandwidth needed to send the stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
For H.264, YouTube lists recommended bitrates of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Use YouTube’s current full table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codec-specific settings. These are ingest recommendations, not server-capacity guarantees. A 2-vCPU plan cannot be declared adequate for a resolution or codec based on these figures alone.

YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple viewer-facing output formats. Your server’s role is to produce and send the ingest stream; YouTube handles those output variants.
How to choose and validate a Droplet
- Set the stream target. Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current encoder guidance. These choices define much of the encode and network workload.
- Choose the CPU model based on workload. For sustained encoding, start with CPU-Optimized if predictable CPU access matters. For light or intermittent work where cost is the priority and variability is acceptable, Basic is a plausible trial.
- Compare like with like. Compare the same vCPU and memory configuration, then check the current price, transfer allowance, and any plan-specific network details. Included transfer is a monthly allowance, not a statement of instantaneous throughput.
- Run the actual FFmpeg pipeline. Test the full command using representative motion and audio, not just a low-motion or silent sample. Observe CPU headroom and whether the stream remains healthy while encoding and sending.
- Check bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% above the total stream bitrate. Its encoder guidance recommends testing before a live stream, and its streaming tips advise monitoring stream health.
- Adjust based on the test. DigitalOcean allows resizing a bundled Droplet to a larger bundled plan, including a different Droplet type. If the chosen configuration lacks CPU headroom or network capacity for your tested settings, resize or change the configuration and test again.
There is no established universal minimum vCPU count for FFmpeg YouTube streaming here: no published FFmpeg benchmark ties a particular Droplet size to a codec, preset, resolution, or frame rate.

Bandwidth and transfer are different constraints
At a constant bitrate, the stream’s data volume accumulates over time, so estimate monthly transfer from the bitrate and the hours you expect to stream. A 4,000 GiB transfer allowance does not tell you whether the Droplet can sustain the required upload speed at a given moment. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. If audio or additional outputs add to the stream’s total bitrate, account for them when checking the available bandwidth.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to check
- FFmpeg cannot keep up or CPU stays saturated: Check the actual codec, preset, filters, resolution, and frame rate. Test on the same settings you intend to use. A Basic Droplet’s shared CPU can vary; for sustained CPU-bound encoding, try dedicated CPU and repeat the test.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: Check outbound bandwidth against the total bitrate and leave the recommended headroom. Monitor the stream during a representative test rather than relying only on a provider’s transfer allowance.
- Keyframe or bitrate settings do not match YouTube’s guidance: Verify CBR, the recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), the codec-specific bitrate, and the selected frame rate against YouTube’s current encoder page.
- The plan looks adequate on paper but the stream fails under real content: Repeat the test with representative motion and audio. Encoding complexity varies, and plan specifications alone do not establish that an FFmpeg command will sustain a particular output.
- Monthly transfer may be insufficient: Estimate data use from total bitrate and planned streaming hours, then compare it with the transfer allowance for the exact plan. Do not treat the allowance as a throughput figure.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube around the clock, rather than to run your own FFmpeg server, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
