Digital video effects are visual alterations, generated imagery, or enhancements made for video. In film and television, visual effects (VFX) often combine digital elements with live-action footage to create imagery that would be costly, dangerous, impractical, or impossible to capture on set. In editing software, “video effects” can also mean operations such as transitions, cropping, or changing a clip’s opacity.

What does “digital video effects” mean?

The phrase has two related uses. In production, it commonly refers to visual effects: creating, altering, or enhancing moving-image visuals, often by combining filmed material with digital imagery. In editing, it can refer more broadly to software operations that change how a clip looks or moves.

Autodesk defines visual effects as imagery altered, created, or enhanced for live-action media when it could not be captured during filming because doing so would be costly, dangerous, impractical, or impossible. Autodesk’s VFX explainer also distinguishes VFX from CGI and practical effects.

How are VFX, CGI, and practical effects different?

  • VFX (visual effects) is the broader process of creating, changing, or integrating imagery for a shot or sequence.
  • CGI (computer-generated imagery) is imagery created digitally. It can be one ingredient in a VFX shot, but the terms are not interchangeable.
  • Practical special effects are captured during filming without computer assistance, using physical elements or techniques on set.

Everyday conversation sometimes blurs these labels. A useful example is an actor filmed in front of a green screen: the screen is a production technique, the digitally created environment is CGI, and isolating the actor and combining the elements into a finished shot is VFX.

What is compositing?

Compositing combines separate visual elements into one coherent image. An artist might layer a digital object over live-action footage or replace a green-screen background with a different setting. The goal is not merely to place elements together, but to make them read as parts of the same shot.

Autodesk’s compositing overview describes workflows such as layering CGI and replacing green-screen backgrounds. Tracking and lighting or shading also help digital elements align with moving footage and fit its visual conditions.

How are digital effects made?

The exact workflow depends on the shot. A simple transition between clips does not require the same work as integrating a computer-generated environment into live-action footage. A VFX sequence may involve several of these stages:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create or prepare elements. Artists make or source the digital imagery, which may include 3D models and animation.
  2. Track and align. Motion tracking helps position digital elements in relation to movement in the filmed material.
  3. Composite the shot. The separate components—such as footage, a keyed actor, and a generated background—are combined into one image.
  4. Adjust the composition. Editing or compositing software can change transforms, cropping, opacity, and layer timing.
  5. Render and review when needed. Rendering produces the resulting moving image in workflows that require it. Not every ordinary editing effect needs a complex 3D render.

How are VFX different from ordinary editing effects?

Editing applications use “effects” for a wide range of changes, including transitions, image adjustments, masks, text, and changes to clip layers. Apple’s video-composition documentation describes operations such as transforms, cropping, opacity, timing, and custom compositors. Apple’s AVFoundation documentation is one example of how these operations can be defined in software.

A transition between two clips is a video effect in the broad editing sense. Digitally creating an object and integrating it into live-action footage is conventionally described as VFX. The distinction is useful, though the words are not governed by a single universal taxonomy.

Available effects vary by application and by the effect files installed. Adobe notes that Premiere’s available effects depend on installed effect files, and that some effects support high-bit-depth processing. Adobe’s effects documentation explains these qualifications; an editor’s effect list should not be assumed to match another application’s.

Which kind of effect workflow fits the task?

  • For a simple edit or transition: use the editing application’s built-in clip and transition controls.
  • For animated titles or graphic elements: look for a motion-graphics workflow suited to text and layered animation.
  • For green-screen replacement or combining footage and digital elements: use a compositing workflow that supports isolating, tracking, and layering elements.
  • For a newly generated 3D object or environment: use a 3D creation workflow, then integrate the result with the footage if the shot requires it.

When choosing an approach, consider the task first, then the control it needs, compatibility with the footage and other tools, and whether the digital result must be integrated with live-action material. Capabilities differ across software; the term “video effects” alone does not identify a particular feature set.
