Test a digital experience by checking whether people can complete important tasks, use the product accessibly, and get acceptable performance across the browsers, devices, and conditions your audience actually uses. No single automated run proves that a website or app works for everyone: combine repeatable journey tests, representative browser and device checks, accessibility assessment, and both lab and real-user performance evidence. Then document exactly what you tested and what you did not.
Start by defining the experience you need to test
Choose a small set of high-value user journeys before choosing tools. Examples include finding an important answer, signing in, submitting a form, completing a purchase, or creating and playing content. For each journey, state the user-visible outcome that counts as success—for example, a confirmation appears after a valid form submission—rather than coupling the test to internal implementation details.
- Audience and scope: Identify the browsers, operating systems, device types, app platforms, and assistive-technology contexts relevant to your users.
- Risk: Prioritize flows whose failure would prevent an important task or cause significant user difficulty.
- Acceptance goals: Define accessibility expectations and performance goals for the service. For web performance, Google’s current Core Web Vitals guidance gives specific recommended thresholds, described below.
- Boundaries: Decide which pages, app screens, journeys, locales, and environments are in scope. A sample is not the same as full coverage.
W3C’s WCAG Evaluation Methodology (WCAG-EM) 2.0 starts with defining the evaluation scope and goal, then exploring the product and selecting a sample. The W3C overview, dated 23 July 2026, says WCAG-EM 2 applies to websites, mobile applications, and other digital products. It is an evaluation methodology supporting WCAG, not a replacement accessibility standard or a guarantee of compliance.
Automate repeatable website journeys
End-to-end browser automation is useful for checking that important user-visible behavior continues to work after changes. Playwright’s official best-practice guidance recommends tests based on what end users see and interact with, isolated test state, resilient locators, frequent CI runs, and cross-browser projects. These are practical recommendations, not a claim that any one tool or configuration fits every product.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Set up each test independently. Provide the data and state the journey needs, and avoid relying on a previous test having run successfully. Isolation makes failures easier to reproduce and reduces order-dependent results.
- Locate controls by user-facing meaning. Prefer locators that reflect accessible names or visible labels where practical. Tests built around fragile implementation details can break even when the user experience has not changed.
- Assert outcomes, not just clicks. After an action, verify the meaningful result: a page or dialog appears, an error is presented, submitted information is acknowledged, or the next step becomes available.
- Run a useful browser matrix regularly. Include the browser engines and projects that represent your audience. Playwright recommends frequent CI execution and cross-browser projects; a successful run in one browser does not establish that another browser works.
- Keep failure evidence. Preserve enough output from failed runs to reproduce the problem and identify where the expected user-visible result diverged.
For mobile website coverage, Playwright device emulation can represent selected device settings, including viewport and touch behavior. Emulation helps exercise chosen configurations; it does not prove that the site behaves correctly on every physical device or network.
Use screenshots as visual evidence, not as a complete experience test
A screenshot can help a team inspect a page’s appearance at a particular viewport and capture a visual record for review. It cannot establish that a form submits, a keyboard user can navigate the page, content responds correctly to an interruption, or a page meets a performance target. Pair visual inspection with journey, accessibility, and performance checks.

For a repeatable visual check, choose the page state and viewport that matter, make sure the test reaches that state consistently, capture the page, and compare the result with an approved reference. Investigate meaningful differences rather than treating every pixel change as a defect: dynamic content, timing, fonts, and responsive layout can affect a capture. Record the viewport and relevant setup with the result so a later comparison has context.

Assess accessibility with automation and human evaluation
Automated accessibility scans are a useful first pass, not a verdict. Playwright’s accessibility guidance notes that automation can detect some common issues, while many problems require manual assessment. An empty automated violation list does not prove that a website or app is accessible.
- Run automated checks: Use them to surface issues they can detect, such as missing labels or some color-contrast problems.
- Manually assess real interaction: Check whether content and controls are understandable and usable through relevant interaction methods, including keyboard use and assistive technology.
- Include people with disabilities where possible: Inclusive user testing can reveal barriers that rule checks and expert inspection miss.
- Report the evaluation boundary: Record criteria, sample, methods, findings, and exclusions. Do not turn a limited scan or sample into a claim of complete accessibility.
WCAG-EM 2.0 provides a tool-independent process: define the scope, explore the product, select a representative sample, evaluate it, and report findings. Its guidance specifies that the randomly selected sample set added to the structured sample is 10% of that structured sample set. This is part of a sampling method, not a requirement to test only 10% of a product or a claim that the sample proves every view is conformant.

The UK Government Digital Service offers one public-sector example, not a universal legal requirement: its monitoring includes simplified testing, detailed testing, and mobile-app testing against WCAG 2.2 levels A and AA. GDS says detailed testing is sample-based and does not provide full coverage; its mobile app process tests both Android and iOS versions.

For native apps, exercise key screens and complete user flows on the platforms the product supports. Android’s core app-quality guidance recommends navigating screens, dialogs, settings, and flows, and checking interruptions or transient changes such as another app taking focus, network connectivity, GPS availability, battery function, and system load.

- Use emulators where they help you cover selected configurations quickly, and include representative physical devices and OS versions for your audience.
- Test important flows under conditions that can change their behavior, such as losing network access or returning to the app after an interruption.
- If the product supports both Android and iOS, test both. Evidence from one platform does not establish how the other behaves.
- State which devices and versions were included. Android guidance says teams do not need to test every device on the market and points to third-party device labs, including Firebase Test Lab, for broader coverage.
Measure web performance in both the lab and the field
Google’s Web Vitals guidance frames Core Web Vitals around loading, interactivity, and visual stability. The set named in Google web.dev’s article, last updated 31 October 2024, is Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). Google recommends assessing the thresholds at the 75th percentile of page loads, segmented across mobile and desktop.
| Metric | What it represents | Recommended “good” threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | Loading | 2.5 seconds or less |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | Interactivity | 200 milliseconds or less |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | Visual stability | 0.1 or less |
These are web performance signals, not universal app-store quality scores. Metrics and guidance can change, so consult Google’s current Web Vitals documentation when setting targets.
Use lab results to diagnose and prevent regressions
Controlled lab runs are useful during development because a team can reproduce chosen conditions, compare changes, and catch regressions before release. They answer how a page behaved under that test setup; they do not describe every user’s conditions.

Field measurements reflect a mix of real devices, networks, and user interactions. web.dev cautions that lab results do not replace field measurement. Lighthouse cannot measure INP without user input, so Total Blocking Time (TBT) can act as a lab proxy, but it is not a direct INP result. Interpret a lab proxy as diagnostic evidence, not as a field metric.
Troubleshoot common testing gaps
- A browser test passes but users still report a broken flow: Check whether the test covers the affected browser, device, state, and journey. A passing test only supports the scenario it actually exercised.
- Automated runs fail inconsistently: Review whether tests share or depend on state, whether they locate elements through brittle implementation details, and whether the expected visible outcome is asserted after the action.
- A mobile website works in emulation but fails on a phone: Treat the emulated configuration as partial coverage. Reproduce the issue on representative physical hardware and record the browser, OS, viewport, and conditions.
- An accessibility scan reports no violations: Continue with manual assessment and, where possible, inclusive user testing. Automated checks detect only some kinds of barriers.
- A strong lab score conflicts with user complaints: Compare the lab conditions with field evidence, including the affected device and interaction context. Lab and field results answer different questions.
- A visual comparison shows unexpected differences: Confirm that the same page state and viewport were captured, then inspect whether dynamic content or timing explains the change before treating it as a regression.
Report what the evaluation establishes
A useful report lets another person understand both the result and its limits. Record the journeys and screens included; browser engines, devices, OS versions, and app platforms used; accessibility criteria and evaluation methods; and performance environments and data sources. Include the sample and how it was selected, the findings, and any excluded areas. WCAG-EM emphasizes recording outcomes to support transparency and replicability. Avoid claims of complete coverage based on a handful of automated checks or a sample-based audit.
