On a digital camera, “record mode” usually means the setting for the file a photo or video is saved as, or the quality of that output. For still photos, common choices include RAW, JPEG, HEIF, or RAW paired with a processed copy. It does not mean exposure modes such as aperture priority or manual: those control how the camera makes an image, not the file it records.

What does record mode mean on a digital camera?

“Record mode” is not a standardized menu label. Depending on the camera, the related controls may be called Image quality, Recording file format, or Movie mode. The useful distinction is what kind of file the camera creates and, for a still photo, the selected image-quality output. Nikon’s Z50II online manual, for example, discusses recording options such as image area, quality, and size; Fujifilm’s X-T5 manual lists photo image-quality controls separately from its movie-mode menu item.

Do not confuse a recording or file-format choice with an exposure or shooting mode. Aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual exposure determine how the camera sets exposure. RAW, JPEG, and HEIF describe still-image output formats.

What still-photo recording options might a camera offer?

RAW

A RAW file is a camera-specific image-data file intended for later processing. It gives you room to adjust aspects such as white balance and exposure compensation during processing, but it is not usually the finished, broadly shareable image. Nikon describes converting RAW files to JPEG and other widely supported formats as “RAW processing” in its Z50II online manual. RAW implementations and processing requirements vary by camera.

JPEG

JPEG is a processed still-image format with broad support across devices and software. Fujifilm describes it as the “widely-supported JPEG format” in its X-T5 manual. It is often the straightforward choice when you want a finished file that is easy to view and share, without planning to process every image yourself.

HEIF

Some cameras offer HEIF as another processed still-image option. Sony describes HEIF recording as capable of high image quality with small file sizes in its HEIF file-type guide. But HEIF is not universally supported in viewing and sharing workflows: Fujifilm notes more limited viewing and sharing options than JPEG in its X-T5 manual. Check that your computer, phone, editing software, and intended recipients can handle it.

RAW plus JPEG or HEIF

Should you shoot RAW, JPEG, or HEIF?

Choose Best fit Consider
RAW You expect to edit photos and want flexibility over adjustments such as white balance and exposure compensation. You will need a compatible RAW-processing workflow to produce convenient finished files.
JPEG You want processed images that are easy to view and share across common devices and software. You may have less latitude for later adjustments than when processing a RAW file.
HEIF You want a processed option that some cameras describe as offering high image quality with small file sizes. Confirm compatibility first; viewing and sharing support is more limited than JPEG in Fujifilm’s documentation.
RAW + JPEG/HEIF You want a RAW original for editing and a processed copy ready to use. Whether this pairing is available, and which processed format is offered, depends on the camera and its settings.

There is no single best choice for every photographer. Decide how much post-capture adjustment you want, whether you need a ready-to-share image, and which formats your devices and software support. The cited manuals do not establish a universal file-size or image-quality ranking across these choices.

Are image size, aspect ratio, and movie mode part of record mode?

They are related settings, but not synonyms for still-photo file format or quality. Image size controls pixel dimensions; aspect ratio controls the shape of the image; and image area may select how much of the sensor is used. Nikon groups some of these controls with recording options while describing them separately in its Z50II manual. Fujifilm likewise lists photo image-quality items and a movie-mode menu item separately in its X-T5 manual.

Video settings should be treated as their own model-specific choices. The exact movie formats and quality options vary, and there is no universal cross-brand list that applies to every camera. Check the relevant camera manual rather than assuming its movie mode follows the still-photo RAW/JPEG/HEIF choices.

How to find the record-mode setting on your camera

  1. Identify the exact camera model. Menu names and available formats differ between models, even within one manufacturer.
  2. Open that model’s current official manual. Search within it for “image quality,” “recording file format,” “RAW,” “HEIF,” or “movie mode.”
  3. Check the nearby controls separately. Confirm whether the setting changes still-photo format, image size, aspect ratio, or movie recording; similar menu placement does not make them the same control.
  4. Verify your workflow. Before selecting HEIF or RAW, make sure the devices and software you use can view or process the files as needed.
