If a digital camera lens is stuck, switch the camera off and do not push, pull, twist, or help the lens move by hand. Check whether it is a compact camera with a built-in motorized lens or an interchangeable-lens camera, then follow the instructions for that exact camera or lens model. If it was dropped or exposed to moisture, looks crooked, or makes grinding noises, leave it off and arrange service.
First, identify the camera and the problem
A compact camera’s built-in lens usually extends and retracts under motor power. An interchangeable-lens camera has a removable lens; a zoom ring that will not move may have a lock, while a lens that will not detach or a camera that reports an error needs model-specific guidance. The symptom alone does not establish whether the cause is debris, low battery power, impact, moisture, or a mechanical fault.
Look up the exact camera or lens model in its manufacturer’s manual or support site. The instructions below are examples, not a universal procedure: manufacturers’ troubleshooting applies to specific products. For example, Sony’s compact-camera guidance covers its listed products and was modified September 15, 2021; Sony UK’s applicable guidance was modified July 23, 2025. Sony’s zoom-lock instructions address a specified E-mount category. Canon’s cited lens-error guidance is for the older PowerShot A450/A460, not every Canon camera.
Safe steps for a compact camera with a stuck lens
- Turn the camera off. Stop repeatedly cycling the power or pressing buttons in an attempt to make the lens move. Sony warns, “Do not attempt to manually force the lens in or out.” Canon also notes that holding a lens while it is moving can trigger a lens error on the PowerShot A450/A460.
- Check the exact model’s instructions. If its manufacturer recommends a power reset, use that procedure rather than assuming instructions for another model apply.
- For the Sony compact-camera procedure cited here, turn the camera off, remove and reinsert the battery, then turn it on and check whether the lens moves. If it remains stuck, Sony says to reset the camera. Reset procedures vary, so use the steps for the particular model.
- Follow any model-specific next steps or contact support. If the lens remains stuck, an error returns, or the manufacturer’s guidance says service is required, stop troubleshooting and arrange repair.
Safe steps for an interchangeable zoom lens
Check for a zoom lock
Some zoom lenses have a switch or mechanism that locks the lens barrel. Check the lens markings and its manual for a zoom-lock control, then release it only as the manufacturer directs. Sony’s cited guidance recommends checking for a lock on the specified E-mount lens category; if there is no applicable lock or the problem continues, service may be needed.

Do not force the lens or its controls
Do not twist a resistant zoom barrel, push or pull the lens, or try to detach a lens that will not release normally. Use the camera and lens manuals for the correct removal procedure. If the lens is visibly misaligned, the mount appears damaged, or it will not move after checking its lock, stop and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service center.
When to stop and seek repair
- The camera or lens was dropped, struck, or exposed to moisture.
- The lens barrel looks crooked or visibly out of alignment.
- You hear repeated grinding or clicking noises.
- The manufacturer’s reset or troubleshooting steps do not restore normal movement.
- A lens error keeps returning, or the maker’s instructions direct you to service.
Leave a camera off if it has been dropped or gotten wet, or if the lens appears misaligned or makes repeated abnormal noises. Sony, Panasonic, and Canon each direct users toward repair or customer support in the applicable situations described in their guidance. A technician may need to inspect the camera; the symptom by itself does not identify a broken motor, gear, or other specific part.

Cleaning is not a stuck-lens repair
If the model’s instructions point to loose, accessible dust on the camera exterior, Sony’s general cleaning guidance recommends a plain manual blower for dust and dirt. Keep it to gentle exterior cleaning; do not blow into the gap around the lens or assume that a blower will clear internal debris or free a mechanism. Sony warns that canned air or compressed air may damage the image sensor or cause a malfunction. Cleaning advice does not establish that dust is the cause of a stuck lens.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat not to try
- Do not push the lens inward, pull it outward, twist it, tap the camera, or assist the motor by hand.
- Do not keep cycling power when movement has stopped or abnormal noises are present.
- Do not use canned compressed air, open the camera or lens, or apply solvents as a general fix.
- Do not assume the camera has a particular broken part based on the symptom alone.
Manufacturers warn that forcing or holding a moving lens can cause damage or errors. Consumer troubleshooting guidance does not support opening the camera, using solvents, or applying repair kits as universal fixes.

Choosing a repair route
When the safe steps fail, consult the camera or lens manufacturer for the appropriate repair route in your region. Confirm that the service option covers your exact model and whether the camera body, removable lens, or both need attention. If you are considering an authorized service center, verify its current authorization and availability with the manufacturer. Repair costs and options vary by model and location, so request a current quote rather than relying on a general estimate.
