Diffusion duration is a chosen measure of how long a signal takes to spread through a network; synchrony is a measured alignment among neural, physiological, behavioral, or representational patterns. The duration depends on the network, how the signal starts and spreads, and what counts as reaching the endpoint. Synchrony can indicate coordination or similarity, but it does not by itself show that a group has become one mind.
What does diffusion duration mean?
Diffusion duration is the interval from an initiating signal, or seed, until propagation stops, reaches a specified coverage threshold, or produces stable coordination. In a social network, it may be measured in elapsed time or in discrete diffusion steps. Those are not interchangeable: one step might represent a message passing between connected people, while elapsed time depends on how quickly those exchanges occur.
The endpoint matters as much as the clock. A study that stops when most nodes have received a signal will report a different duration from one that waits for every reachable node or for a synchrony measure to stabilize. There is no single standard duration for a collective mind, because the term describes an explanatory frame rather than a universally established scientific metric.
Three different stopping points
- Propagation stops: no further nodes receive the signal under the model’s rules.
- Coverage threshold: a chosen share or set of nodes has received it.
- Coordination stabilizes: a specified measure of alignment reaches a defined condition.
These endpoints answer different questions. Signal arrival measures spread; stable coordination measures a pattern in activity. One does not automatically establish the other.

What can synchronize in a distributed mind?
Synchronization can refer to several distinct levels of organization, from timing relationships among signals in one brain to coordinated behavior among people. Keeping the level explicit helps avoid treating every kind of similarity as evidence of the same process.
| Level | What is compared | What it can indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Neural phase synchronization | The temporal relationship between neural signals, including across functionally specialized brain regions. | Coordinated timing within neural activity. In The brainweb (2001), Francisco Varela and coauthors describe phase synchronization as a candidate mechanism for integrating distributed activity into a coherent cognitive moment. |
| Intersubject neural synchrony | Neural activity recorded from different people. | Similarity in responses or, under specified conditions, an index of similar subjective states. The result depends on the measurement method and must be distinguished from responses that people share because they experienced the same stimulus. |
| Interpersonal coordination | Behavioral or physiological signals, such as turn taking, movement, or breathing. | Coordination between people, whether it develops through reciprocal interaction, follows a leader, or is prompted by a shared external event. |
| Collective knowledge and beliefs | How information is passed and integrated across a human communication network. | Group-level patterns in shared knowledge, memories, or beliefs. The collective-minds literature uses this framework to study socially distributed cognition. |
Hyperscanning records the activity of two or more brains during interaction and is used to investigate dynamic inter-brain synchronization. A 2026 review of synchronized minds highlights it as a method, not as proof that participants share a literal consciousness.

How does a signal spread, and what sets its duration?
In a network, a signal moves from a seed through connections between nodes. Its path and duration depend on both the network and the rules governing propagation. A short path between people can help information travel quickly, while weak connections, missed transmissions, or a low probability of propagation can slow or prevent spread.
Network structure and seeding
Topology—the arrangement of connections—shapes which routes are available and how information or knowledge can be integrated. A well-connected structure may support rapid reach, but speed alone says little about how many nodes eventually receive the signal. Seeding also matters: a process that introduces the signal at one point differs from one that activates nodes sequentially or uses multiple seeds over time.

Coverage can trade off against speed
A 2017 Scientific Reports study of modeled network-diffusion strategies reported that its SQ_TSN sequential-seeding strategy averaged 1.4 times the duration of the study’s single-stage approach. The study’s longest SQ_1PS_R sequences averaged 11.9 times the single-stage duration. These are averages for those strategies in that study, not constants for human groups or a general measure of how long it takes people to agree. The study describes the broader trade-off directly: “Longer seeding sequences tend to activate more nodes but they also extend the duration of diffusion.”
To compare systems meaningfully, duration needs to be read alongside the outcome and conditions that produced it:

Does synchronized activity mean two people share a mind?
No. Synchrony is evidence of coordination or similarity under a particular measurement model; it does not establish a single shared consciousness. Neural patterns can align because two people attend to the same stimulus, because one person leads and another follows, or because they interact reciprocally. Correlated measurements alone do not show which explanation applies or prove that one person’s activity caused the other’s.
The distinction also applies within a brain. Varela and coauthors proposed phase synchronization as a candidate way for specialized regions to coordinate activity. That account concerns a mechanism for integration, not a demonstration that the brain is a network of separate minds or that any observed synchrony produces unified experience.

Reviews of collective cognition describe how communication networks help people share and synchronize memories, knowledge, and beliefs. That is a useful way to analyze group-level cognition without making a metaphysical claim: people can build aligned representations through communication while remaining distinct individuals.
How should a claim about synchronization be read?
When a paper, product, or popular account says that brains or people are “synchronized,” check what was measured before interpreting the claim. The label could mean phase relationships within neural signals, similarity between participants’ recorded activity, or coordinated behavior such as movement or turn taking. Each supports a different conclusion.
- Identify the signals and the people or brain regions being compared.
- Check whether participants shared a stimulus or whether the study measured interaction between them.
- Find the endpoint and timescale: elapsed time, discrete diffusion steps, a coverage threshold, or a stability criterion.
- Separate evidence of alignment from evidence about its cause. Synchrony alone does not establish reciprocal influence.
- Read duration together with coverage, topology, and propagation conditions rather than treating a faster spread as automatically better.
Human cognition is socially distributed: communication networks influence collective memory, beliefs, problem solving, and knowledge integration. Diffusion duration helps describe how a signal travels through those networks; synchronization describes patterns of alignment that may arise within or between people. Their connection is informative, but neither term supplies a universal clock for when a group starts thinking as one.
