Tablet mode and the touch keyboard change how Windows works; neither adds missing touch hardware. Here’s how to tell what your device supports and where to check when an input method is not working.
How touchscreen, touchpad and pen support differ
| Capability | Input surface or requirement | Typical actions | What varies by device |
|---|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen | Finger or compatible pen on the display | Tap, two-finger scroll and zoom, press and hold, edge swipe | Whether the display has touch hardware, whether Windows detects it, and which controls and gestures are available |
| Touchpad | Finger on a separate pointing surface | Tap, two-finger scroll and zoom, touchpad-specific right-click, and some multi-finger navigation | Some three- and four-finger gestures require a precision touchpad; settings and manufacturer drivers also matter |
| Digital pen | A pen digitizer and compatible protocol; some functions may use Bluetooth | Writing, drawing, note-taking, markup and navigation | Compatibility depends on the PC, pen model, protocol and model-specific functions |
| Tablet mode | Windows 10 software interface mode | Changes the interface to be more touch-friendly | It does not supply touch hardware or guarantee particular gestures |
| Touch keyboard | On-screen Windows keyboard | Typing with a finger or pen; handwriting input | Available layouts and languages vary |
Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 in some cases. The distinctions above describe the input capabilities; follow Windows 10-specific paths below rather than assuming newer Settings menus apply.
What touchscreen gestures work in Windows 10?
A touchscreen takes input directly from the display. Microsoft lists these common actions:
- Tap to select an item.
- Drag two fingers horizontally or vertically to scroll.
- Pinch or stretch two fingers to zoom in or out.
- Press and hold to see more commands, similar to a right-click.
- Swipe inward from a screen edge for an edge gesture.
Available controls and gestures depend on the device and Windows settings. Microsoft directs users to Touch settings to configure three- and four-finger touch gestures and screen-edge gesture controls.

How is a touchpad different, and why might three-finger gestures fail?
A touchpad is the separate pointing surface usually below a laptop keyboard. Its gestures move or control the pointer; they are not the same as touching the display. Microsoft lists tapping to select, two-finger scrolling and zooming, and a two-finger tap or press in the lower-right area for more commands. Touchpads may also support three-finger swipes for window navigation and desktop actions, and four-finger swipes to switch desktops.
Not every touchpad supports every gesture. Some three- and four-finger touchpad gestures require a precision touchpad. Open Settings > Devices > Touchpad in Windows 10; Microsoft says the page displays “Your PC has a precision touchpad” when that capability is present. The Touchpad settings page is also where supported gestures can be configured.

Does every Windows 10 touchscreen support a pen?
No. A touchscreen does not by itself establish that a digital pen will work. Pen support depends on the PC’s digitizer and protocol as well as the pen model. Some pen functions may use Bluetooth, but Bluetooth alone does not establish handwriting or drawing compatibility.
If you want to use a Surface Pen with a non-Surface Windows PC, check the PC manufacturer’s specifications for Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) support and version, then match that version to the exact pen model. Microsoft lists examples including Surface Slim Pen at MPP v2.6; Slim Pen (1st generation) and Surface Hub 2 Pen at v2.5; Surface Pen with no clip at v2.0; the single-button flat-edge model at v1.5; and the two-side-button model at v1.2. These are model-specific compatibility references, not evidence that any touchscreen supports a pen.

What do Tablet mode and the touch keyboard do?
Tablet mode is a Windows 10 interface mode intended to make Windows easier to use by touch. Toggle it from Action Center. It changes the software experience, not the device’s hardware capabilities; it cannot add a touchscreen, precision touchpad or pen digitizer.
The touch keyboard is the on-screen keyboard for typing with a finger or pen. Its handwriting panel accepts handwriting from either. Layouts and language options can vary. Having a touch keyboard available does not confirm that a particular pen or set of gestures is supported.

How to check or enable a Windows 10 touchscreen
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Find HID-compliant touch screen. If it is disabled, use the device’s enable option; if you need to turn touch off, use the disable option.
- If multiple HID-compliant touch screen entries appear, check each one as needed.
If there is no such entry, Windows may not be detecting the touchscreen hardware. A device without a touchscreen cannot gain one through Tablet mode or a software setting.

- Check the Touchpad page in Windows 10 Settings to see whether Windows identifies a precision touchpad and whether the relevant gestures are configured.
- Use Windows Update to check for touchpad driver updates, as Microsoft recommends.
- If needed, open Device Manager and update or reinstall the touchpad driver.
- If updating or reinstalling the driver does not resolve the problem, contact the device manufacturer.
For touchscreen gestures, check Touch settings separately. Touchscreen, touchpad and pen support are distinct, so troubleshooting one does not establish that the others are present or working.

The PC can still work, but under the ended support arrangement Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes. Check Microsoft’s current terms for any extended-security options rather than assuming they are included.
