Choose diff3 for command-line three-way comparison and merging, Meld for a graphical view of files or directories, and vimdiff if you want to compare or resolve changes inside Vim. The right fit depends on how you work and what you need to see—not on a documented universal winner for speed, ease, or accuracy.
How the three tools differ
These tools address overlapping but distinct needs: diff3 is a command-line utility for comparing three files and combining changes; Meld presents file and directory differences graphically; and vimdiff opens differences in Vim’s windows and buffers. For Git conflict resolution, Git documents Meld and vimdiff as mergetool options. The documentation reviewed here does not establish diff3 itself as a Git mergetool in the same sense.
diff3: command-line three-way comparison
GNU diff3 compares three files and can merge two versions that were changed independently from a shared ancestor. In its conventional merge invocation, the inputs are ordered mine older yours: the first and third are the newer versions, and the second is their common ancestor. A three-way comparison is useful because it lets the tool interpret each side’s edits relative to the same earlier file.
When the changes cannot be reconciled automatically, diff3 reports a conflict. GNU’s manual calls a conflict in which all three inputs differ an “overlap.” Options let you show changes, mark or select conflict classes, or produce a merge output. Even when the command produces a merged file, conflict markers and the surrounding edits need human review. GNU Diffutils 3.12 documents diff3’s behavior and exit statuses: 0 means success, 1 means conflicts were found, and 2 means trouble.

Use diff3 when terminal input and output suit your workflow, particularly for scripts or a lightweight command-line process. It is not the choice for a visual side-by-side editing experience.
Meld: graphical file and directory comparison
Meld’s official help describes comparing two or three files, or two or three directories. You can move content between compared items or edit files manually. Its graphical overview is useful when you want to inspect how changes relate visually or compare directory contents rather than just one file.

Git documents Meld as both a mergetool and a difftool. Git’s mergetool documentation also describes optional auto-merge behavior: if enabled and supported by the installed Meld version, non-conflicting sections can be merged automatically while conflicts are left for the user to decide. Support and setup depend on the installed Git and Meld versions.
vimdiff: comparisons inside Vim
Vim’s diff mode can display differences between two and eight versions of the same file. vimdiff is the easiest command to start Vim with diff mode set up. That range describes Vim’s diff-mode capability; it does not mean every Git merge opens that many panes.

For Git’s documented vimdiff mergetool, the default layout has four windows: LOCAL, BASE, and REMOTE are read-only buffers representing the current branch, common ancestor, and incoming branch; MERGED is the writable result. Git lets you configure the pane layout and use variants such as gvimdiff or nvimdiff. This is a natural fit if Vim is already part of your editing workflow; users who prefer a conventional graphical merge view may find the multi-pane interface less approachable.

How to choose for a Git conflict
Start with the view and context you need while resolving the conflict. In a three-way merge, the common ancestor helps you distinguish changes made on each side. Meld’s graphical comparison is suited to visual inspection and moving content; vimdiff exposes the base and both branches in Git’s default four-window layout, with a separate writable result. For terminal-only comparison or a command-line merge outside that Git mergetool workflow, diff3 is the relevant option.

- Choose Meld if seeing file or directory differences graphically is important.
- Choose vimdiff if you are comfortable navigating and editing in Vim and want to resolve a Git conflict there.
- Choose diff3 if you want a command-line comparison or merge against a shared ancestor.
Available screen space, how you prefer to move among conflict regions, and whether you want the base version visible can affect the choice. Git allows vimdiff layout customization, and Meld’s auto-merge behavior depends on configuration and installed-version support, so defaults are not the only possible workflow.
