Choose a diesel generator only after you know which equipment must run, how much power it needs to start and operate, and whether the generator is intended for occasional emergency backup or regular use. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all kW recommendation for a “typical home” or small business. The right capacity and rating depend on your actual loads and operating plan.

Start with the backup job, not the generator size

Decide what must stay powered during an outage and what can be switched off. A home might prioritize selected essential circuits; a small business may need particular equipment, lighting, communications, or other vital systems. The U.S. Department of Energy advises businesses to identify essential utilities and determine the power needed for vital systems and equipment before selecting a backup generator.

Build a load list

  • List the equipment and circuits you want to keep running.
  • Record each item’s running demand and its startup demand, using its label or manufacturer documentation where available.
  • Note which items might start while other loads are already operating.
  • Mark optional loads that can be shed if the generator is near its capacity.
  • Tell the installer whether the system is for occasional outage backup or expected to operate regularly.

Give this inventory to a qualified generator designer or installer to validate the required capacity. The DOE planning guidance establishes the need to size for vital systems, but does not provide a universal household sizing formula. A home’s floor area or a business’s label is not enough to establish a suitable kW rating.

Match the rating to the intended duty

Generator ratings describe different applications; they are not interchangeable measures of suitability. A DOE-hosted technical primer describes standby sets as backup or emergency units intended for limited outage duration and distinguishes prime and continuous applications. Because that presentation is older, do not treat any generic operating limit from it as a current rule for every generator.

Rating or duty What it indicates What to verify
Standby Emergency or backup service for limited outage duration, as described in the DOE-hosted primer. Confirm the manufacturer’s current specification for permitted operating hours, capacity, load factor, and any overload capability.
Prime A distinct application from standby in the DOE-hosted primer; the right choice depends on the planned operating pattern. Check the exact model’s current rating plate and data sheet for its permitted duty and capacity.
Continuous A distinct application from standby in the DOE-hosted primer, intended for a different operating pattern. Check the exact model’s current rating plate and data sheet for its permitted duty and capacity.

Before purchase, ask the supplier to identify the rating that applies to your intended use and show where the manufacturer specifies it. Compare the rated capacity with the validated load list, including startup demand; do not select a unit from a headline “maximum” figure alone.

Decide whether diesel fits your site

Diesel is one possible fuel, not an automatic best choice for every home or small business. The right comparison depends on the site, load, and expected operating pattern; the available evidence does not establish a universal cost, reliability, or performance winner among diesel, gasoline, propane, and natural gas.

Compare options against the same requirements:

  • Purchase and installation cost for the complete system.
  • Fuel availability, storage arrangements, and expected runtime at your actual load.
  • Cold-weather starting provisions and any site-specific operating constraints.
  • Noise, emissions, and applicable certification requirements.
  • Service access, replacement-parts support, maintenance intervals, and expected operating hours.
  • Whether the generator will be portable or permanently connected, and what connection method is allowed.

Ask suppliers to answer these questions for the specific model and your location. Current model availability, prices, emissions certification, warranty coverage, dealer support, and local permit requirements need to be verified for the buyer’s region rather than assumed from a general buying guide.

Plan the connection and installation before buying

A permanently connected generator requires more than choosing a set and placing it at the property. Before purchase, discuss the connection equipment, permitted connection method, grounding, site, utility requirements, and local electrical and building codes with qualified professionals. The Department of Energy says installation should follow manufacturer instructions, utility specifications, and building safety codes.

OSHA warns against connecting a generator directly to a building’s electrical system unless a qualified electrician has properly installed a transfer switch. Treat transfer equipment as part of a professionally planned electrical installation, not as a do-it-yourself workaround. Ask who will obtain any required permits and confirm that the proposed installation meets local requirements.

Make carbon-monoxide safety part of the purchase decision

For fuel-powered portable generators, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says to operate the generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from buildings, and away from openings. Never run one inside a home or garage, on a balcony, or near doors, vents, or windows. Follow the specific generator manual and local fire and electrical guidance as well.

Install working carbon-monoxide alarms in the home. EPA identifies a digital display and battery backup as useful alarm features. An alarm is an additional safeguard; it does not make unsafe generator placement safe.

What to have ready when requesting a quote

  • Your essential-load inventory, with running and startup demands where available.
  • Your expected operating pattern: occasional outage backup or regular/continuous operation.
  • The proposed location and whether you are considering a portable or permanently connected unit.
  • Questions about fuel supply and storage, runtime at the expected load, maintenance, noise, emissions, and cold-weather provisions.
