Taco Bell did not announce that it was cancelling Voice AI. In late August and early September 2025, the company signaled it was reconsidering where and when the technology should take orders, including whether people should handle orders at busy restaurants or monitor the system and step in. Taco Bell separately said Voice AI remained part of its future. Those statements describe a more selective approach, not a confirmed shutdown—and they reflect the 2025 discussion, not verified policy at every restaurant today.

Why is Taco Bell slowing its AI drive-thru rollout?

The reconsideration followed customer complaints and viral videos highlighting awkward or glitchy interactions. In an interview reported by TechCrunch on August 30, 2025, Taco Bell Chief Digital and Technology Officer Dane Mathews described the technology’s performance as mixed: “Sometimes it lets me down, but sometimes it really surprises me.” He discussed deciding which restaurants and circumstances are suited to Voice AI, rather than using it in the same way everywhere.

Mathews said Taco Bell would coach restaurant teams on when to use Voice AI and when to monitor it and intervene. Busy restaurants were one situation in which human order-takers might be preferable. The remarks point to deployment choices and human oversight; they do not establish a company-wide pause or a final operating policy.

What happened when someone ordered 18,000 cups of water?

A customer’s request for “18,000 water cups” became a viral example of people trolling the voice-ordering system. Nation’s Restaurant News reported that a human employee took over after the glitch. It is a striking incident, but it is not a controlled test or a measure of how often the system makes mistakes.

Nation’s Restaurant News also described online complaints about inaccurate orders, interruptions, pauses and slower service. Those are grievances reported in online discussion, not findings from a representative customer survey. The cited coverage provides no independently measured failure rate or controlled comparison of AI and human order-taking.

Did Taco Bell cancel its AI drive-thru?

No cancellation was announced in the 2025 coverage. Taco Bell told Nation’s Restaurant News that it “continues to see the technology as a core part of our future” and said it was continuing to invest, learn, improve and scale Voice AI. That is the company’s stated direction; it does not mean every earlier rollout target or deployment choice stayed unchanged.

The chronology helps explain why the headlines can sound contradictory. On July 31, 2024, Yum! Brands said Voice AI was already live in more than 100 Taco Bell drive-thrus across 13 U.S. states and announced plans to expand to hundreds of U.S. locations by year-end. The company said the technology was intended to optimize operations and enhance customer satisfaction. The target was a plan, not confirmation that it was met.

TechCrunch reported on August 30, 2025, that Voice AI had reached more than 500 drive-thrus. That is a contemporaneous 2025 report, not a current location count. The later discussion about adjusting how the system is used came after the expansion effort was already underway.

When might AI-led or human-led ordering make sense?

The remarks support a flexible operating model, not a verdict that one method is always better. Taco Bell’s stated goals include order accuracy, wait times, team-member workload and customer experience, but the cited sources do not provide controlled results showing whether AI or people perform better on those measures.

Approach Context described in the reporting What is established
AI-led ordering Use Voice AI where the restaurant and circumstances are considered suitable. Taco Bell has continued to describe the technology as part of its future; no independent performance figures are provided.
Human-led or human-monitored ordering People may take orders at busy restaurants, or staff may monitor Voice AI and step in when necessary. Mathews described these as options for teams to use depending on the restaurant and timing; the coverage does not establish a universal rule for every location.

Can you ask a human to take your Taco Bell drive-thru order?

Mathews’s remarks, as reported in 2025, describe employees monitoring Voice AI and jumping in when needed, and human order-taking as a possible choice at busy restaurants. They do not confirm that customers can request a human at every Taco Bell location, or establish current rules for individual restaurants. The exact operating policy as of October 4, 2026, is not established by the cited coverage.

What the 2025 coverage does—and does not—establish

  • Voice AI was expanding before the viral incidents: the July 2024 company announcement described its initial footprint and stated expansion target.
  • By August 2025, TechCrunch reported the system at more than 500 drive-thrus, while customer complaints and viral clips drew attention to the experience.
  • The water-cup prank illustrates a glitch and a human takeover, but cannot show how frequently failures occur.
  • Taco Bell executives discussed tailoring deployment and having employees monitor or take over; the company also said it would keep investing in Voice AI.
  • The cited reports do not establish the present location count, current operating rules, a subsequent policy change, or numerical performance results.
