Laguna Beach High School students did develop and test a material designed to bind venom toxins—but they did not produce an approved or patient-ready antivenom. In a 2013 laboratory project, students and teacher Steven Sogo made molecularly imprinted polyacrylamide nanoparticles that bound cytotoxins from Mozambique spitting cobra venom. The reported tests were in vitro, meaning they were conducted outside a living body.

What the students made

The project involved Steven Sogo and nine students at Laguna Beach High School in California. Their work was reported in 2013 by Chemistry World and described in a paper titled “Molecularly-imprinted nanoparticles that recognize Naja mossambica cytotoxins: binding studies and biological effects,” published in Chemical Communications.

The target was cytotoxins in Mozambique spitting cobra venom (Naja mossambica mossambica). The students made molecularly imprinted polyacrylamide nanoparticles: small polymer particles formed around toxin molecules so that, after the templates were removed, the polymer would retain spaces suited to binding those toxins. The paper’s abstract reports avid and specific binding, along with neutralization of cytotoxin activity. The news report says in-vitro tests found that the particles prevented toxin-associated cellular damage. The PubMed record summarizes the paper’s findings.

How molecular imprinting works

Molecular imprinting is a way to shape a material around a target. In this project, venom cytotoxins served as templates while polyacrylamide formed around them. Removing the templates left binding cavities intended to fit the toxins, somewhat like a mold retaining the shape of an object.

  1. Choose a target: The project focused on cobra venom cytotoxins.
  2. Form the polymer around it: Acrylamide monomers were mixed to interact with the toxins as the polymer formed.
  3. Remove the templates: Dialysis removed the toxin molecules, leaving particles with complementary binding spaces.
  4. Test binding and activity: The project reported toxin binding and in-vitro neutralization effects.

The accessible abstract and report do not establish detailed concentrations, an efficacy rate, or comprehensive safety results, so those should not be inferred from the headline.

Did the experiment produce a usable antivenom?

No. It produced a promising laboratory candidate, not a demonstrated treatment for snakebite. The paper’s conclusion was that the findings “hold promise for the development of a synthetic antivenom.” That is a statement about research potential, not evidence that the particles have been tested in patients, approved by regulators, or made available as medicine. The reviewed sources do not report clinical trials or regulatory approval for these nanoparticles.

Approach What binds the toxins Evidence and status Target scope in the reported work
Established antivenom approach Plasma-derived immunoglobulins or derivatives, including antibody fragments A 2026 review describes these as the approved treatment approach. Not specified for a particular product in the cited review summary.
Laguna Beach student nanoparticles Engineered binding cavities in molecularly imprinted polyacrylamide Reported in-vitro research; no patient treatment or regulatory approval is established in the reviewed sources. Mozambique spitting cobra cytotoxins.

Conventional antivenoms are commonly made by immunizing animals with venom and collecting antibodies from serum, as the 2013 report explains. The nanoparticle project explored a different, synthetic binding strategy; the available sources do not provide comparative efficacy or cost figures. A later review discusses nanoparticle strategies as research rather than as a replacement for approved antibody-based treatment. The 2026 review describes the current treatment approach.

How this project fits into antivenom research

Students have contributed to antivenom-related research in other settings, but those examples do not change the status of the high-school nanoparticles. The University of Costa Rica’s Instituto Clodomiro Picado reports that university thesis projects have contributed to antivenom production research. Its account gives an average of 8,000 vials per year in the 1970s and production of 110,000 vials in 2016; those are historical institutional figures, not current output. The institute’s account describes that work.

In a separate example, Southern Illinois University Carbondale reported in 2018 on undergraduate Helen Mihm’s research with faculty member Keith Gagnon, exploring synthetic DNA aptamers as possible binders for snake venom toxins. That is another experimental line of research, not evidence that aptamers or the Laguna Beach particles are clinical antivenoms. The university report covers Mihm’s project.

Arizona State University’s 2026 historical feature discusses professor Herbert Stahnke’s earlier work on scorpion antivenom. ASU says he had developed an antivenom by 1948, that supplies of the historical product were depleted around 2004, and that a private-company scorpion antivenom is used today. This is separate historical context, not evidence about the cobra-toxin nanoparticles. ASU’s feature describes that history.

What to take away from the headline

  • The students’ work was a genuine research project led by a high-school teacher.
  • They developed toxin-binding polymer nanoparticles and reported in-vitro binding and neutralization findings focused on cobra cytotoxins.
  • The findings suggested a possible synthetic antivenom direction, but did not establish a treatment that patients can receive.
