dfc reports filesystem capacity and usage in a df-like table, with a graph and color in its default terminal presentation. Use it to inspect mounted filesystems, check inode use, filter rows, or export a report. Its available-space figure is from a regular user’s perspective, and human-readable values may be rounded.
What does dfc report?
dfc is a command-line utility for reporting file system space usage. Its report shows filesystem capacity and use; the graph and color make relative usage easier to scan in a terminal. The project describes it as similar to df, with those visual features added. See the dfc upstream project and the Debian dfc(1) manual.
The available-space value is based on f_bavail, space available from a user point of view, rather than f_bfree, the free-space figure from root’s perspective. As a result, the amount shown as available to you can be lower than the filesystem’s total free space.
Run a basic report
dfcWith no arguments, dfc prints its normal human-readable report. Human-readable sizes can be rounded. If you need a particular unit or more precise values for inspection or scripting, select a unit explicitly with -u; the manual documents -m for SI units.

Inspect inodes and control which filesystems appear
-ireports inode information rather than block-space usage. Inode counts matter when a filesystem has run out of file entries even though it still has free capacity.-llimits the report to locally mounted filesystems.-ashows all filesystems.-pfilters by filesystem name, and-tfilters by filesystem type.-oincludes mount options.-qsorts the output.
For exact filter argument syntax and sorting choices, consult the manual for the version installed on your system; packaged versions and supported options can differ.
Export or redirect the report
The manual documents text output by default and export formats selected with -e: CSV, HTML, JSON, and TeX. For example, to save a CSV report:

dfc -e csv > foo.csvJSON export can be combined with selected fields, as described in the command manual. For scripts, prefer structured output and explicit units over parsing a human-readable terminal table; verify the field and unit options supported by the installed version.
Color is automatic by default: it is enabled when standard output is a terminal and disabled when output is piped. Set -c always, -c auto, or -c never to control color. Output also adjusts to terminal width; use -f to force information to display when the automatic width behavior is unsuitable, such as with redirected output.

dfc or df?
Choose based on the report you need, rather than assuming the commands are interchangeable across all platforms.

GNU’s df manual describes that implementation as reporting mounted filesystems and says it cannot report available space on unmounted filesystems. That is a statement about GNU df, not every operating system’s df or every dfc build. See GNU Coreutils 9.11: df invocation. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal compatibility or performance advantage for either command.

Install and configure dfc
The upstream project documents a source build using CMake, with a Makefile wrapper. Its README recommends configuring and building in a separate build directory, then running make; the resulting binary is placed in a bin subdirectory. The documented default installation location is /usr/local/bin. Build configuration can change the installation prefix and system configuration directory. Follow the current upstream README for the exact commands and requirements for your platform.
The documented configuration file is $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/dfc/dfcrc. On systems without XDG Base Directory Specification support, the listed fallback locations are $HOME/.config/dfc/dfcrc and $HOME/.dfcrc. Configuration can change default colors, color thresholds, graph symbols, and HTML export colors.
