DevVault is described by its author as a local Go command-line tool for storing development secrets and passing them to a launched program without writing them into a plaintext .env file. Its advertised features include encrypted local storage, profiles, and secret scanning. Those are author-reported capabilities—not independently verified security guarantees.
What DevVault is—and what it is intended to do
In a September 23, 2026 DEV Community announcement, Saravanakumar G describes DevVault as an open-source, local secret manager and runtime environment injector. Rather than relying on a project’s plaintext .env file, the advertised workflow is to save values in a local SQLite vault and launch a child process with the values supplied as environment variables.
That makes DevVault a local-development workflow, not a hosted secrets service. The announcement does not establish team-wide access, centralized administration, or audit logging. Whether it fits a project depends on whether local storage and process-level injection meet that project’s needs.
How the advertised workflow works
Store a secret
The author says devvault set KEY accepts a secret through hidden terminal input. Hiding input can reduce the chance that a value is exposed on screen while typing, but the announcement does not establish how secrets are handled in every terminal, shell, or system state.

- Military-Grade Encryption: Utilizes advanced encryption techniques to safeguard your sensitive information, providing you with enhanced privacy and security.
- Offline Account Management: Store up to 1,000 sets of account credentials in PasswordPocket.
- Support for Multiple Platforms: PasswordPocket works seamlessly across multiple platforms, including iOS and Android mobile phones and tablets.
Run a program with secrets
With devvault run, the tool is described as decrypting values in memory and passing them to the child process as environment variables. This avoids generating a .env file for that advertised flow. It does not, by itself, show that a secret cannot be observed by the launched application, other software with access to the process, diagnostic tools, or the operating system.
Separate profiles
The announcement names profiles such as default, staging, and production, and says each profile uses an independent salt. This is a reported design detail; the available information does not establish how profile selection, access control, or recovery works in practice.

- ✅ PROTECT ONLINE ACCOUNTS – A password manager, two-factor security key, and secure communication token in one, OnlyKey can keep your accounts safe even if your computer or a website is compromised. OnlyKey is open source, verified, and trustworthy.
- ✅ UNIVERSALLY SUPPORTED – Works with all websites including Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, and Google. Onlykey supports multiple methods of two-factor authentication including FIDO2 / U2F, Yubico OTP, TOTP, Challenge-response.
- ✅ PORTABLE PROTECTION – Extremely durable, waterproof, and tamper resistant design allows you to take your OnlyKey with you everywhere.
- ✅ PIN PROTECTED – The PIN used to unlock OnlyKey is entered directly on it. This means that if this device is stolen, data remains secure, after 10 failed attempts to unlock all data is securely erased.
- ✅ EASY LOG IN –No need to remember multiple passwords because by plugging OnlyKey to your computer, it automatically inputs your username and password. It works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or Chromebook, just press a button to login securely!
Reported encryption settings and their limits
Saravanakumar G reports that DevVault encrypts vault data with AES-256-GCM and derives a key using Argon2id configured for 64 MB of RAM, three iterations, and four threads. These are configuration claims from the author’s September 23, 2026 announcement, not evidence of an independent security review or proof that the implementation is secure.

- Offline Local Storage for Privacy:This Password Keeper stores all your login credentials directly on the device, with no cloud or internet connection, helping reduce exposure to hacking and data breaches.
- Full Control of Your Sensitive Data:Unlike cloud-based managers, this physical device keeps your passwords entirely under your control. Your information never leaves the device, and you won’t share it with third-party servers.
- Built-in Device Password Protection:Add an extra layer of security with optional device password protection, helping prevent unauthorized access to your stored records if the device is misplaced.
- Compact Hardware Vault for Credentials:A secure alternative to handwritten notes or spreadsheets, this portable device lets you store unique, complex passwords for all your accounts in one place.
- Simple USB Type-C Access:Connect via the included USB Type-C cable to your laptop, phone, or standard 5V charger to view and navigate your passwords on the built-in screen, no internet required.
Other features the author lists
- A Git entropy scanner intended to detect likely secrets in staged files.
- A pre-commit hook installation option.
- Encrypted
.dvexport and import. - Windows, Linux, and macOS support.
These features and platform claims are also author-reported; platform-specific behavior and implementation were not independently checked. A scanner or hook can be an additional safeguard, but the announcement does not establish that it catches every secret or replaces careful handling of credentials.
What to verify before relying on DevVault
The announcement links to the project repository and a v1.0.1 release, but those pages were not retrievable for verification. It therefore does not establish the current release, whether the project is maintained, its license, or the implementation behind the advertised features. The post also gives this installation command, whose present availability and operation have not been confirmed:

Before adopting the tool, check the repository and release information directly. For a security-sensitive workflow, also look for implementation documentation, issue and release activity, and any independent review. Test how the tool behaves on your operating system and confirm that your application receives the expected variables without writing them to files or logs.

When this approach may—or may not—fit
A local vault with process injection may suit an individual developer who wants to avoid keeping secrets in a project’s plaintext .env file. It is not established here as a replacement for a centralized secrets system when a team needs shared access, granular permissions, auditability, or managed recovery. Those requirements should be assessed separately rather than inferred from the listed local features.
