DevOps is a way for software development, operations, security, and related teams to share responsibility for planning, delivering, and running software. It combines collaboration and organizational change with engineering practices such as automated testing, repeatable releases, and production monitoring. The aim is to connect work across the software lifecycle so teams can learn from production and improve the next change—not simply to automate deployments.

What DevOps means

In a traditional handoff model, developers build software and pass it to operations teams to deploy and maintain. DevOps reduces those barriers by aligning people around shared goals and operational outcomes. Microsoft describes it through people, process, and technology across the application lifecycle; Amazon Web Services emphasizes changing the culture and mindset that separate development and operations.

DevOps is not one product, a job title, or a required technology stack. Nor is it synonymous with cloud computing, microservices, or CI/CD. Those may be part of an implementation, but none alone supplies the collaboration, feedback, and shared accountability that define the approach.

How DevOps works across the software lifecycle

DevOps connects planning, coding, release, and production operations in a recurring feedback loop. The phases are useful for understanding the work, not a mandatory sequence of role-specific handoffs; people from multiple disciplines may contribute throughout.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Plan: Clarify customer needs, prioritize work, track bugs, and make progress visible. Teams may use backlogs and Scrum or Kanban practices to coordinate priorities.
  2. Develop: Collaborate on code through version control, review changes, and build software in manageable increments. Automated tests can reveal defects while a change is still small.
  3. Integrate and prepare: Regularly combine code changes and run automated builds and tests. Teams prepare deployable changes and check them in test or production-like environments.
  4. Deliver: Use repeatable release processes, appropriate approval gates, and infrastructure automation. Rollout practices can limit the impact on customers if a release causes problems.
  5. Operate and learn: Maintain production services, collect telemetry and logs, and use actionable alerts to identify issues. Teams use what they learn about reliability and performance to guide future work.

This loop is meant to make the consequences of changes visible to the people who can improve them. Developers share responsibility for how their changes behave in production, while operations, security, and product roles contribute their expertise to the same outcomes.

What the main DevOps practices do

  • Version control records source changes, supports collaboration and review, and lets teams recover earlier versions.
  • Continuous integration (CI) automates the integration, building, and testing of code changes. Its purpose is to surface integration problems and defects earlier.
  • Continuous delivery (CD) automates building and testing and keeps changes in a deployable state through a standardized release process. Delivery readiness does not necessarily mean every change goes live automatically; approval or release controls may remain in place.
  • Infrastructure as code (IaC) describes and versions infrastructure in code, allowing teams to review it and provision environments more consistently.
  • Configuration management automates and tracks resource settings to reduce manual variation and configuration drift.
  • Testing and deployment automation make checks and releases more repeatable, reducing dependence on manual steps.
  • Monitoring and observability help teams understand service behavior through telemetry, logs, and alerts, and provide information for troubleshooting and improvement.
  • Security and database change management bring controls and changes to data systems into the delivery process rather than leaving them disconnected from it.
  • Small batches, visible work, and a learning culture help teams limit the size of changes, understand work in progress, and use outcomes to improve how they operate.

These are capabilities, not a checklist that every team must implement in the same way. A team’s architecture, skills, constraints, and operational needs affect which practices and tools make sense.

How to tell whether a DevOps approach is working

Shipping more frequently, by itself, does not prove that a team has improved. Delivery speed matters alongside reliability, security, and the ability to recover from problems. Microsoft highlights recovery time and reliability; Google Cloud points to DORA software delivery performance metrics as one way to consider delivery and operational outcomes.

When comparing approaches, look at how quickly teams get feedback and how large their changes are; whether services remain reliable and teams can recover; how repeatable the build, release, and infrastructure processes are; whether security and operational controls fit the work; and whether the approach matches the team’s architecture and skills. There is no universally best tool stack, and adopting DevOps practices does not guarantee faster delivery or higher reliability.

What the available survey figure does—and does not—show

Google Cloud’s 2023 announcement about its State of DevOps report described a cumulative survey of more than 36,000 professionals worldwide over nine years. That figure describes the accumulated survey at the time of the announcement; it is not a 2026 sample size or the result of a single year’s survey. It also does not establish a universal benchmark or prove that a particular DevOps practice caused a specific outcome.
