1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the media framework that matches your target devices: start with AVFoundation for Apple platforms and Jetpack Media3 for most new Android audio and video apps. Then define the formats, timing, security, and device behaviors your product must support; build capture or playback as observable stages; and validate the complete experience on representative hardware. A framework provides media capabilities, but it cannot guarantee a particular codec, latency, or device compatibility without testing.
Choose a media framework for your target platform
Begin with the operating systems and devices your app must support. Apple and Android provide different native media abstractions, so the right starting point depends on platform reach, required control over capture and rendering, and the amount of device-specific behavior involved.
Apple platforms: AVFoundation
AVFoundation is Apple’s framework for working with time-based audiovisual media. Its capability areas include inspecting media, reading and writing it, playback, capture, editing, audio processing, streaming, AirPlay, and synchronization. Use it as the starting point when the product targets Apple devices and needs those platform media capabilities.
Android: Jetpack Media3
Android recommends Jetpack Media3 for most new audio and video experiences. Its components include MediaSession, ExoPlayer, and Cast-related functionality, with abstractions intended to support media experiences across a varied Android device ecosystem. Start with the relevant Media3 components, then add platform-specific handling where your device requirements call for it.

Compare the approaches against product requirements
| Decision area | Apple platforms | Android |
|---|---|---|
| Native starting point | AVFoundation | Jetpack Media3 for most new audio and video apps |
| Documented capability scope | Media inspection, reading and writing, playback, capture, editing, audio processing, streaming, AirPlay, and synchronization | Playback and media-session components, ExoPlayer, and Cast-related components; device-capability optimizations are part of the Media3 approach |
| Key implementation consideration | Choose the AVFoundation capabilities needed for the capture, playback, processing, or streaming workflow | Use Media3’s components and abstractions while accounting for Android device variation |
For either platform, compare candidates on codec and container needs, synchronization, latency, adaptive streaming, DRM and authentication, offline playback, observability, and access to representative test hardware. The frameworks expose different abstractions; neither is a universal guarantee of support for every format or device.
Define the device and media contract before building
Write down the inputs, outputs, formats, and behaviors the product must handle. This contract helps prevent a working demo on one device from being mistaken for a reliable product across the intended device range.

- Inputs and outputs: cameras, microphones, displays, speakers, audio routes, and any external or TV inputs.
- Media formats: required codecs and containers, audio sample rates, video frame rates, and color or HDR behavior.
- Timing: latency targets, audio-video synchronization requirements, and what the app should do when timing falls out of tolerance.
- Content workflow: whether the product handles live media, on-demand media, or both; whether offline playback is required; and how protected content and authentication are handled.
Set targets from the product’s use case and verify them on the devices you intend to support. The framework descriptions establish capability areas, not a universal latency or reliability target.
Design capture and playback as observable stages
Keep the major stages distinguishable in the architecture and in diagnostics. For a capture workflow, that can mean tracking capture, encoding, buffering, and delivery separately. For playback, observe input or network delivery, buffering, decoding, rendering, audio routing, and synchronization. This makes a failure easier to localize than treating the experience as one opaque “media” operation.

Plan for timing and interruption failures
Test conditions that disturb a media pipeline, including clock drift, dropped frames, audio underruns, route changes, interruptions, device sleep and wake, network loss, bitrate changes, and malformed media. Define what the app should report, recover, or stop doing for each failure mode; expected behavior depends on the product rather than a single platform-wide rule.
Add custom media logic only for a defined need
Use the platform player when it satisfies the product’s playback requirements. Introduce custom logic when a concrete need—such as specialized buffering, telemetry, synchronization, or a particular content workflow—cannot be met by the platform path. Additional control also means additional behavior to implement and validate.

Build a live-streaming path around HLS
A common HLS production path has four parts: an encoder accepts audiovisual input, a segmenter creates media files and an index, a web server or content-delivery network distributes them, and client software fetches the segments for playback. HLS can serve live and prerecorded content, provide alternate bitrates for adaptive switching as network conditions change, and support encryption and user authentication.
- Encode the source: produce the audiovisual media required by the delivery workflow. In Apple’s described HLS architecture, live production includes a hardware encoder.
- Segment and index: create the media segments and the index that lets a client request them in sequence.
- Distribute the media: serve the segments through a web server or CDN that clients can reach.
- Play and recover: use the platform player when it meets requirements, and measure behavior under changing network conditions, bitrate changes, and interruptions.
- Secure access: design authentication and encryption handling as part of the stream workflow. A custom HLS client may need to fetch decryption keys and handle authentication.
Do not assume a particular latency, codec result, DRM behavior, or compatibility outcome from the architecture alone. Those depend on the implementation and the devices, services, and content involved.

Treat TVs and external devices as integration work
Connected-TV support can extend beyond ordinary media playback. On Android TV, the TV Input Framework provides APIs for manufacturer TV-input modules and metadata used in search and recommendations. HDMI-CEC control involves a service backed by low-level drivers and the TV hardware abstraction layer. Product teams should establish early which behavior is available through their app-facing APIs and which depends on manufacturer or device integration.
Build a device matrix that covers the combinations relevant to the product:
- Display EDID and supported-format negotiation.
- HDMI-CEC behavior and the control events the product depends on.
- Audio output routes, remote-control events, and input changes.
- Tuner or passthrough inputs, where applicable.
- Regional broadcast requirements, where applicable.
Do not treat a successful test on one television, adapter, or HDMI path as proof of behavior across other manufacturers or regions.
Validate the whole pipeline on representative hardware
Media compatibility depends on the full path—not just a framework call. Test the intended capture source, device capabilities, encoding or decoding path, network or external connection, rendering target, and audio route together. Include the hardware models and operating-system versions that matter to the product, and record failures by pipeline stage so teams can distinguish format, timing, routing, network, and integration problems.

Its presence does not by itself validate segmenting, distribution, security, client playback, or device compatibility; those stages need their own tests.
