Developing infotainment in an AUTOSAR environment is primarily an integration problem: an in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) computer must exchange approved data and services with vehicle ECUs, while each part of the system meets its own timing, resource, safety, security, and update requirements. AUTOSAR is not the infotainment user-interface operating system, and there is no single stack every automaker uses.

How does infotainment fit into an AUTOSAR vehicle?

An IVI system typically runs on a comparatively capable computer and provides functions such as media, navigation, and connected services. Separate vehicle ECUs handle other functions. An integration boundary—often involving a gateway and defined interfaces—controls which information and services pass between those domains.

The architecture assigns work to platforms according to the needs of the function and the vehicle program. An IVI operating system may manage the user-facing applications, while AUTOSAR Classic runs on deeply embedded ECUs. An Adaptive AUTOSAR platform or another high-performance service platform may be used where the design calls for service-oriented applications. These are possible roles, not a mandatory arrangement.

What does AUTOSAR Classic do?

AUTOSAR Classic organizes ECU software into three main layers: application software, the Runtime Environment (RTE), and Basic Software (BSW). Application software is divided into software components with defined interfaces. The RTE provides the configured connection between those components and the underlying basic software, which supports the ECU’s software and hardware needs.

Classic is intended for deeply embedded systems with strong predictability, safety, security, and responsiveness requirements. Its methodology supports specifying and integrating software components on an ECU, mapping them to ECU resources, and integrating ECUs across network technologies. AUTOSAR describes the platform purpose and Classic architecture on its home page and Classic Platform page.

In an IVI project, Classic components generally belong on the ECUs and embedded functions assigned to Classic by the vehicle architecture; AUTOSAR itself does not define the IVI screen, application experience, or a universal division of functions.

How do Classic, Adaptive, and Android Automotive differ?

Platform Typical architectural role Key distinction
AUTOSAR Classic Software platform for deeply embedded ECUs Layered application, RTE, and BSW architecture, designed for demanding predictability and responsiveness requirements.
AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform for applications in distributed real-time embedded environments Its Communication Management function handles service-oriented communication between applications. Its presence does not mean a particular vehicle uses Adaptive for IVI.
Android Automotive OS (AAOS) Full-stack platform that runs directly on vehicle hardware for IVI and digital cockpits It is an in-vehicle operating system, not an AUTOSAR layer. Android Auto is phone-based projection and is a different product.

This is a role-based comparison, not a benchmark or a prescribed vehicle design. AUTOSAR’s Adaptive Platform architecture explanation describes Communication Management; Android’s Android Automotive overview and Android Automotive explanation describe AAOS and distinguish it from projection.

How can Android Automotive communicate with AUTOSAR ECUs?

AAOS and an AUTOSAR ECU do not communicate simply because both are present in the vehicle. The system needs defined interfaces, an agreed network and communication design, and a controlled path between the IVI environment and vehicle services. A gateway can enforce that boundary, but its exact responsibilities and the permitted APIs depend on the vehicle program.

Android’s evolving software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture materials provide one documented example: SDV Core, SDV Media, and SDV IVI virtual machines, with integration options that include SOME/IP and the Vehicle HAL (VHAL). This is an architecture example, not a universal AAOS deployment template. The AAOS SDV system architecture describes that approach.

What role does SOME/IP play in an IVI system?

SOME/IP is a middleware option for service-oriented communication over IP. It can support infotainment-related communication, including use cases involving head units and telematics. In an integrated design, services need clear definitions: what a service offers, how applications find it, how messages or requests are exchanged, and which networks and gateways carry that traffic.

SOME/IP is not a complete vehicle architecture and is not the only possible communication choice. Protocol selection, service exposure, network topology, and gateway behavior must be decided for the system. The SOME/IP overview describes its use across infotainment and other vehicle domains.

How to develop and integrate the system

  1. Establish platform and ECU boundaries

Identify the IVI computer, vehicle-control ECUs, gateway, network connections, and any Adaptive or other high-performance service platform. Assign each function to the platform that can meet its timing, resource, safety, security, and lifecycle needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Define components, services, and interfaces

For Classic software, specify the application components and their interfaces, map them to ECU resources, and determine how the RTE and BSW will be configured. For distributed functions, define service boundaries, interface behavior, discovery, and communication expectations. Specify which vehicle data or services the IVI system may access.

    • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  3. Choose the network and gateway design

Decide how data moves between platforms, which communication mechanisms are used, and where filtering or other access controls belong. If SOME/IP is selected, define its use in the context of the target network and service architecture rather than treating the protocol as the architecture itself.

  4. Configure platforms and vendor tools

Configure the selected AUTOSAR platform and any AAOS or other platform integration to match the interfaces and deployment design. Toolchains, configuration formats, release compatibility, and code generation depend on the implementation and project; AUTOSAR does not make every vendor’s workflow interchangeable. Siemens, for example, names Capital Embedded AR Classic as one AUTOSAR implementation, but that alone does not establish its package contents or suitability for a particular program.

  5. Integrate generated and handwritten software

Bring together configured or generated platform artifacts, application code, and the IVI-side integration. Check that interface definitions, software versions, and network assumptions agree across teams; diagnose mismatches at the actual boundary where they occur.

  6. Validate on the intended environment

Check service behavior and system integration on target hardware or in documented virtual environments, as appropriate to the program. The architecture references establish platform and integration concepts, not a complete automotive verification, functional-safety, cybersecurity, or homologation process. Those obligations need a project-specific plan.

Which choices determine the actual stack?

Before committing to an architecture, engineering teams need to resolve the project-specific decisions that shape it:

  • Compute and timing: which functions need deeply embedded predictability, and which need a higher-compute operating-system or service platform?
  • Safety and security: what assurance obligations apply to each function, and what information may cross the IVI-to-vehicle boundary?
  • Communication and isolation: which network and middleware choices fit the services, gateway, and any virtual-machine boundaries?
  • Lifecycle and integration ownership: which platform releases, vendor implementations, toolchains, update plans, and team responsibilities apply?

AUTOSAR states that released files are provided for information purposes and that commercial exploitation of AUTOSAR work requires a license; organizations should verify the applicable terms with AUTOSAR before commercial use. Its Classic Platform information directs interested parties to apply for AUTOSAR partnership. That licensing question is separate from selecting an IVI operating system or communication middleware.
