neuron-js lets an application represent business rules as JSON, validate a script before running it, and inspect which rules and conditions affected a decision. Its key boundary is that scripts use component types registered by the host application—not arbitrary code supplied by an agent. That can make changing rules easier to review and manage, but it does not replace a workflow platform or make generated rules correct by itself.

What neuron-js does

neuron-js is an embeddable TypeScript rules engine from SebaSOFT. Its project describes a middle ground between hard-coded if/else logic and a larger workflow or BPMN platform: business rules can be represented as serializable JSON scripts, while a host application determines which rule components are available. See the official neuron-js repository for the project’s documentation and examples.

A script groups rules; rules contain conditions and actions. The JSON can carry identifiers, component types, values, parameters, and options. Because it is data rather than a block of generated JavaScript, an application can store it, version it, or pass it between systems. Serialization alone does not ensure that a script is valid, safe for a particular business process, or appropriate to deploy.

How a script moves from data to a decision

1. The application registers allowed components

Neuron is the registry for approved parameter, condition, action, and rule types. Teams may define custom TypeScript components, but the host application chooses which ones to register. That means a stored or agent-generated script can refer only to capabilities made available through that registry, assuming the application enforces the documented execution path.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Synapse validates and evaluates the script

Synapse evaluates a script using the registry and an execution context. The project documents validation before execution: invalid scripts return validation errors rather than proceeding to run. Sebastián Diéguez, writing for SebaSOFT, states, “An invalid script never executes.” This is documented product behavior, not an independently audited security certification; applications still need appropriate authorization, input controls, and testing.

When validation succeeds, Synapse evaluates conditions and runs the associated actions against the execution context. The repository’s quick-start example demonstrates a pricing decision and reading the execution result and context messages. The exact effects depend on the registered components and the executor profile in use.

3. The host inspects the result

The maintainer describes an ExecutionExplanation that can report matched rules, condition outcomes, and evaluation order. In Diéguez’s words, “Every run can produce an ExecutionExplanation: which rules matched, which conditions evaluated true or false, and in what order.” That kind of trace can help a developer diagnose a decision or show why a rule path was taken. It is execution detail, not proof that the business policy itself is fair, correct, or legally compliant.

What an agent integration can—and cannot—delegate

The maintainer’s September 29, 2026 article describes a bundled read-only MCP server with validate_script, execute_decision, and explain_decision tools. Treat that as the integration described in that article, not as a guarantee about the currently shipped package or every neuron-js profile; consult the repository’s current instructions before configuring it.

The repository separately documents an opt-in pure decision runtime. That profile accepts a declared DecisionDefinition, validates context and outcome, and can return a review/replay receipt. It deliberately excludes fetching context, persisting receipts, calling external services, running LLMs, triggering workflow side effects, and providing a CLI, MCP server, or UI. Do not assume those constraints describe the general mutable workflow executor, or assume the pure runtime includes integrations mentioned for another profile.

A practical architecture is to let an agent propose or revise a JSON script, then have the application validate it, review changes, and execute it only through an intentionally configured registry and runtime. Keep authorization, durable storage, external calls, and approval policy in the application or services responsible for them. A validation pass establishes that a script meets the engine’s validation rules; it does not authorize the agent’s business decision.

How to decide whether it fits

Need neuron-js fit What to check
Frequently changing rules such as pricing, eligibility, routing, or automation These are examples of intended use in the project’s documentation. Confirm the available registered components express the policy you need, and version and review rule changes.
A few simple, stable conditions The project advises that a rules engine may be unnecessary. Prefer straightforward application conditionals when they remain easy to maintain.
Arbitrary user-supplied code Not the stated use case; scripts are built from registered component types. Do not treat a rules engine as a sandbox for executing arbitrary code.
Long-running orchestration, process modeling, or broad workflow side effects The project positions neuron-js below a full workflow/BPMN platform in scope. Assess a workflow orchestrator if the problem requires process coordination beyond evaluating rules.
Auditable or replayable decisions Execution explanations and the separate decision-runtime receipt may help, depending on profile. Determine what inputs, outputs, traces, and receipts your application must preserve; the pure runtime does not persist receipts for you.

Performance claims need workload context

SebaSOFT’s September 2026 article reports that neuron-js achieved approximately five times the throughput of json-rules-engine in its medium pricing scenario on Node 24. Project materials also report a minified bundle approximately three times smaller than json-rules-engine; the comparison and measurement setup should be checked in the project materials before using that figure for a deployment decision. These are maintainer-reported, scenario-specific results, not independent measurements or universal ratios.

The project describes benchmark scenarios for pricing, eligibility, and routing, with comparisons including json-rules-engine, json-logic-js, node-rules, and hand-coded TypeScript; it says the harness can be rerun with yarn benchmark. The maintainer also says json-logic-js is faster in pure evaluation while lacking the validation and explanation steps described for neuron-js. Before choosing on performance, compare the same rule complexity, data, runtime version, and measurement method—and weigh the full execution path your application needs, not just raw evaluation throughput.

Practical limits and package currency

The repository and maintainer article are the basis for the capabilities and comparisons described here; they are project-authored materials rather than independent audits. The available package search result reported version 0.7.5 as published one day before its crawl, but the npm page could not be fetched during research. That snapshot is not enough to establish the current release or compatibility. Verify the live package, supported runtime, and repository installation guidance before adopting a version.
