Docling Studio turns document conversion into an inspectable workflow by separating its browser-based interface from a parsing API, organizing backend services around domain ports, and building its results around Docling’s structured document model. Conversion can run in the parser process or be delegated to Docling Serve; optional reasoning is a separate, opt-in capability.

How does a document become something you can inspect?

Studio is a visual document-analysis application built around Docling. Its workflow lets users configure processing, inspect page-level results and bounding boxes, and work with extracted content. The point is not just to display a converted file: Studio presents conversion output in a form that can be examined and used through visual inspection and export features.

The browser client handles interaction and presentation

The project describes a frontend built with Vue 3, TypeScript, Vite, and Pinia. It is responsible for the user interface, PDF viewer, and presentation of results. The frontend calls the backend through /api/*.

The parser service handles conversion and storage

The separate parser service uses FastAPI and Docling. It handles REST endpoints, parsing, and storage. This division places interactive presentation in the browser-facing client and document-processing work in the backend. That is the documented service boundary; it does not, by itself, establish how every deployment scales or how services are secured.

What does the backend architecture separate?

The Studio README describes the backend as hexagonal architecture, also called ports and adapters. Its tree separates domain concepts from API, persistence, and infrastructure code.

Domain contracts sit apart from implementations

The domain/ area contains models, ports, and value objects. Converter and chunker protocols are among the documented domain ports. Concrete implementations live outside the domain, in adapter-oriented parts of the backend.

Canon Canoscan Lide 300 Scanner (PDF, AUTOSCAN, Copy, Send)
  • Scanner type: Document
  • Connectivity technology: USB
  • With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
  • Digitize documents and images

This makes the intended dependency boundary legible: application-facing concepts can be expressed as contracts, while specific conversion or chunking implementations sit beyond those contracts. It is reasonable to read that arrangement as a seam for changing implementations, but the structure is not proof that any adapter can be replaced without integration work, configuration changes, or compatibility checks.

API, persistence, and infrastructure have distinct roles

The API layer exposes the service interface; persistence concerns storage; and infrastructure contains concrete integrations. The documented layout separates these concerns from domain models and ports. The available project documentation maps the structure, but does not provide a complete record of the constraints behind each choice or of alternatives that were evaluated.

Where does conversion run: locally or through Docling Serve?

Studio documents two conversion modes. In local mode, Docling runs in-process with the parser. In remote mode, conversion is delegated to an external Docling Serve instance. The choice changes where conversion dependencies run and what the deployment must connect to.

Consideration Local mode Remote mode
Where conversion runs Docling runs in-process with the parser, according to the Docling Studio README. The parser delegates conversion to an external Docling Serve instance, according to the Docling Studio README.
Deployment footprint The README describes the local image as substantially larger and lists higher memory and CPU recommendations. Exact values are not stated here; see the Docling Studio README. The README describes a smaller image and lower listed memory and CPU requirements than local mode. Exact values are not stated here; see the Docling Studio README.
Operational dependency Conversion dependencies are placed in the parser deployment; a separate Docling Serve service is not required for this mode. The deployment depends on an external Docling Serve instance and the connection to that service.

Choose based on deployment topology, not an assumed speed ranking

Local mode puts conversion alongside the parser, while remote mode separates it into a Docling Serve service. That distinction can guide decisions about dependency placement, service management, and network connectivity. The project’s resource recommendations are deployment estimates, not a controlled local-versus-remote performance comparison. The available documentation does not establish that either mode is faster or produces higher-quality extraction.

What does Docling contribute to the result?

Docling’s converter selects a format-specific backend and processing pipeline, then produces a Docling document. The official Docling architecture documentation describes the conversion result as containing Docling’s fundamental document representation.

DoclingDocument carries structure, not just rendered text

DoclingDocument is a Pydantic-based unified representation. Its documented content includes text, tables, pictures, document hierarchy, layout information where available, and provenance. That structure gives Studio material it can expose for inspection and downstream use rather than limiting the workflow to a single flattened text string.

Different outputs serve different tasks

Rendered Markdown or HTML is useful when the goal is readable content. Page-synchronized inspection and bounding boxes help users relate extracted material to the source page. Chunks and graph relationships are other ways to work with document content. These are distinct representations or uses of conversion output; their presence does not establish extraction accuracy or prove that one output is superior for every task.

How is optional reasoning kept separate?

Live reasoning is documented as opt-in and disabled by default. Studio places the capability behind a ReasoningRunner and an LLMProvider abstraction. The concrete docling-agent integration is in infrastructure, while the API consumes the runner through application state.

This keeps the API from directly owning the concrete reasoning integration. The README names Ollama as the provider currently supported by the implementation. Provider availability can change, so consult the current Docling Studio documentation for the latest support details. Adding another provider would depend on support in the upstream agent integration and a corresponding adapter; the abstraction alone does not guarantee that an arbitrary provider will work.

What the architecture does—and does not—tell you

  • It documents boundaries: a browser client and parser API, domain ports separated from adapters, and distinct local and remote conversion modes.
  • It shows the data model: Docling’s structured document representation is the conversion result Studio exposes through its inspection and export workflow.
  • It isolates an optional capability: reasoning is opt-in and accessed through runner and provider interfaces.
  • It does not provide a full decision record: the available sources do not systematically document why each architectural choice was made, which alternatives were rejected, or measured outcomes for each choice.
  • It does not establish comparative benchmarks: the README’s approximate resource and timing figures are project estimates, not independently validated measurements or a controlled comparison of local and remote modes.
